Edison's Mission

It is our mission at Edison Middle School to work collaboratively to place the focus on the academic, social, and emotional needs of each individual student first and ensure that ALL students are prepared for post-secondary education.


Winter Dance: Join us for an 80's themed Winter Dance this Friday, January 30th from 6-8 p.m. Cost: $2 per person. Pizza, drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.  Contests and prizes for: (1) best 80's clothing (categories: guys, girls, couple, and teacher/admin), (2) break dance competition, and (3) limbo contest!  Not into dancing? Come hang out with friends, eat, and play games while watching episodes of 80's TV shows in the cafeteria. Spring Musical: Calling all singers, actors, dancers and anyone who loves theater:  Edison Middle School will be presenting "Seussical the Musical" this April.  Come be part of the whimsical story of Horton Hears a Who, the Cat in the Hat and other Seussical adventures.  Audition packets are now available from Ms. Richter and Mrs. Peachey.  Auditions will be on Tuesday, January 27 and Wednesday, January 28 in the auditorium, with an audition workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 20th.  Anyone wishing to be a stagehand or help with scenery and props should also let either Ms. Richter or Mrs. Peachey know.  Come join us and bring a friend!


Super Fan Friday: Student Council is sponsoring Super Fan Friday, this Friday Jan 30.  Wear colors or a jersey of your favorite football team even if they are not playing in the Super Bowl.  Everyone can be a Super Fan!


Box Tops for Education: Mrs. Wells is still collecting Box Tops for the school.  Please send yours to Mrs. Wells or give them to any teacher to put in her mailbox.


National Junior Honor Society: Invitations to join National Junior Honor Society will be going out this week to all eligible students.  If your student is interested in joining National Junior Honor Society, Student Activity Forms can be obtained from Mr. Cain in room 128, in the main office, or downloaded from the attached PDF.  All completed forms are due to Mr. Cain by Monday, March 2, 2015.  Any questions can be directed to Mr. Cain at cainza@champaignschools.org.

January is National Mentor Month: Thank you to everyone who mentors a child in the Champaign-Urbana community, we truly appreciate your time and efforts. Making a difference in a child's life is the best gift you can give.  We are currently in need of mentors at Edison Middle School! There are over 15 students who have submitted requests for mentors this year. Mentors visit Edison for one hour every week, play games, chat and hang out with 6th, 7th and 8th graders. If you are interested or know someone that would make a great mentor, please contact Christina Cooper, cooperch@champaignschools.org for an application. We welcome mentors of all ages and walks of life!

Mark Your Calendars for Java and Jazz: Edison Jazz Bands will hold the annual Java & Jazz event on Friday February 13, 6-9pm, at Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 South Prospect. Dessert and coffee/tea included in ticket price. Prices: $10/Adult-HS ($12 @ the door), $7/K-8, $35/Family Max. Tickets available from Jazz band Members or email Frank Wells, TundraRV@sbcglobal.net. Edison PTSA recently awarded 15 mini-grants to teachers and staff for classroom needs, extracurricular club activities, and learning software!  If you'd like to help PTSA develop additional fundraising events, contact Gretchen Pein at gretchenpein@gmail.com

PTA Reflections: Thank you to all students who participated in this year's PTA Reflections contest. Congratulations to the following Edison students whose Reflections entries advanced to State: Grace Rispoli, Leah Courtney, Sara Dickerson, Vanessa Lopez, Michaela Patton, Sia Dey Koontz, and Emily Anderson. Mark your calendar for March 28, 2015 for the SPOTLIGHT event, presented by Illinois PTA in partnership with Millikin University to celebrate children from across the state. This free event is open to all children in Illinois. The afternoon, held on Millikin University's Campus in Decatur, Illinois, celebrates Reflections artists, scholarship winners, and students who serve their communities. The afternoon will include workshops for children and adults presented by faculty and students from Millikin University, an art gallery of almost 500 Reflections pieces, and a reception with light refreshments. College Gear Fridays: Students, wear your Avid or college gear on Friday.  Every Friday!

 

Building CouncilWhat do we do? We don't discuss district issues, personnel or curricular matters, or discipline problems, but we do brainstorm ways to improve and enrich our school environment, and make things run more smoothly for Edison students and staff.  We would like to recruit more parents to building council meetings.  Consider attending a meeting (held in Mrs. Borchardt's room):

February 12 – 7am – 7:45am 

March 12 – 3-4pm 

April 9 – 3 – 4pm 

May 7 – 3 - 4pm 


Friday Night Basketball will be held at Vineyard Church from 7p-8:30p during the second semester on the dates listed below. Vineyard is located at 1500 N Lincoln at the corner of Lincoln and Bradley in Urbana. Basketball is open to boys and girls ages 11-17. Text or call 217-299-0013 for more information.

Social Probation: Please talk to your students about social probation, which is exclusion from participation in and/or attendance at an extracurricular school-sanctioned activity like ball games, concerts and dances.  A student will be placed on social probation if/when:

•He/she has not served the assigned detentions minutes

•He/she is failing one or more classes

•Administration places him/her on social probation.​

Student Council meets in Mrs. Altenbaumer's room, 234 from 2:45-3:30. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month.   All students are welcome to join.   If you missed the first meeting, talk to Mrs. Altenbaumer or Mr. Freeman, our two Co-Sponsors.  You can join anytime during the year.   Come make a difference in your school.
