[Edison-PTSA] IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL UPPINGHOUSE–JANUARY 24TH

January 24, 2014

Dear Edison Families:

I'm writing to share some information with you about a very sensitive and difficult subject. We have been informed that a warrant has been issued for Edison hall monitor Mr. Herb Howard on charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. This incident allegedly took place with an Edison student on school property. This incident is of grave concern to the District, building leadership, our Edison family, and the community.

Here at Edison Middle School, we actively work to create a safe learning environment for our students and have a system of policies and procedures in place that allow us to act when we believe students are at risk. A key component of this system of response is a highly trained staff; all of our staff members are mandated reporters who are trained to report to the appropriate authorities when abuse is observed or suspected.

As soon as allegations of abuse were made, school officials contacted the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Hall monitor Mr. Herb Howard was immediately placed on administrative leave and the District continued to fully cooperate with the authorities while they conducted their investigation. Whenever an employee is placed on administrative leave, that employee is prohibited from being on Unit 4 property and from contacting District students and staff members.

As soon as the District was notified that there was merit to the allegations, the District began conducting an internal investigation to determine the employee's future with the District.

The Edison staff will continue to hold true to their commitment to mandated reporting and initiating the necessary processes to remove any possible threats to the safety of our students.

We value the strength and commitment of our school family and understand that questions or concerns may arise as you process this information. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further support from the Edison administration.

Sincerely,

Justin Uppinghouse

Principal

Edison Middle School
