[Edison-PTSA] EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS–MAY 18TH

May 18

 

  • Student Council: Student council will meet Wednesday May 18th in room 234 from 2:45-3:30 pm.

 

  • Eighth Grade Dance: The 8th Grade school dance at Edison Middle School is Thursday, May 26, 2011 from 7-9 p.m.  We still need at least 5 more volunteers to help with concessions and monitoring the gym. If you would like to volunteer, please let me know by replying to guzmanje@champaignschools.org <mailto:guzmanje@champaignschools.org>   Volunteers should arrive at 6:40 and check in at the concession table in the cafeteria. I will have nametags and duty assignments. Volunteer duties include helping with concessions, helping check in students, monitoring the front door, halls and bathroom, and watching the dance floor and gym doors (doors are left open to allow air in and out, but no one is allowed to enter or leave). If your child does not want you in the gym, let me know and I can assign you to concessions.

 

  • CUSF Scholarships and Awards: To view the press release of all the scholarship and award winners see the attached PDF.

 

  • Poms/Cheer Summer Camp!:

Who:  Incoming 6th - 9th grade girls (from any school) may attend. (ages are flexible)

What: Learn a great dance routine, cheers, make school spirit crafts, and perform for family and friends!

Where:  Edison Middle School North Gym

When:  June 6 - 10, 9:30 am - noon

Why:  Just to have a blast, get dancing, and enjoy energizing music! (Guess what? If you're trying out for EMS Poms next fall, you'll already know the dance routine and cheer if you came to the summer camp!)

 

  • Central Golf Outing: The Central High School Golf Teams will sponsor a golf outing at the University of Illinois Blue Course on Saturday, May 28.  The cost is $65 per golfer which includes cart, green fee, lunch, prizes and beverages.  Tee times start at 8am, so call Larry Becker at 766-3532 for more information or to sign up your foursome!  The entry form is attached.

 

  • BoxTops: Before the end of the school year, please turn in any Boxtops for Education labels that you have saved. Also remember to keep collecting them over the summer so we can use them next year.

  • Book Fair: EDISON LIBRARY BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR MAY 16 – 19 (During school hours) Buy one item at regular price, get one item of equal or lesser value,  FREE

 

  • Eighth Grade Graduation: is May 27th at 9am. A letter went home to parents/guardians this week with more information regarding the event.

 

 

  • Athletics

·          Schedule for intramurals is attached (stomp has been cancelled)

Tryouts for Central cheerleading will be May 17 and May 18 at 7:00 pm in the west gym at Central

 

 

 

  • Boys Basketball: Attached is the flier for BBB summer camp. If you know of any current 5th graders who would be interested in attending please forward this flier to them.

 

  • Dyslexia Presentation: I have attached a flyer for a presentation by Susan Barton, dyslexia expert.  The presentation will be on May 19 at Faith Methodist Church, and seats may be reserved at the website listed on the flyer.

Community Events:


  • Retirement Party: The South Side PTA is hosting a retirement party for Mrs. Burgett and Mrs. Bell next week.  All South Side families, faculty, staff, alumni and interested community members are invited to the Retirement Party for:

To be held on May 26, 2011 from 3:00 until 4:30 p.m. in the South Side Gymnasium.

A short program will commence at 3:15 and refreshments will follow.

 

  • Champaign Public Library: Tamora, Tortall & You!  Don't miss your chance to meet the one and only Tamora Pierce, best-selling author of the Song of the Lioness quartet and other popular fantasy books for teens. She'll be at the Champaign Public Library June 4 for two free programs, one at 10:30 am & 3:30pm.  Pierce will talk about her writing, sign books, and answer your questions. Registration is not required, but it guarantees you a seat and enters you in a drawing for a free book by Tamora.   • What is your teen doing this summer?  Power Learning two-week accelerated learning workshops are designed for middle and high school students entering 5th - 12th grades.  Power Learning workshops build intellectual and academic skills which equip students to excel in all academic endeavors and tests involving writing, reading, and critical thinking skills. Remember even if you have already registered this needs to be updated annually. Target has a similar reward program called Take Charge for Education. Simply apply for a Target charge (Red Card)/debit card, get approved, and Target donates 1% of your Red Card/Target Debit card purchases to your school.
