EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

February 26

 

·         Computer Club: The next Computer Club meeting will be March 1st.

 

·         Date Change: Book-of-the-Month Club will meet THIS Wednesday, March 3rd. They are reading the Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Go to www.mrseaston.com for more information.

 

·         Please Help with ISAT Next Week! The PTSA has an urgent need for volunteers to serve as hall monitors next week during ISATs. Volunteers are needed Monday-Wednesday from 8:15-11 a.m. and Thursday-Friday from 8:15-9:30 a.m. If you are available, please contact Jennifer Clarke at jenniferandjohnc@sbcglobal.net with your contact information and times that you are available to volunteer.  For more information about ISAT testing see the attached document or contact the Guidance Counselors: Mr. Trevor Kampfl at 351-3774 or kampfltr@champaignschools.org and Mrs. Vernita Curry-Taylor at 351-3774 or currytve@champaignschools.org.

 

·         Volleyball:  The 7th graders beat Unity Tuesday night. The 8th graders lost a tough fight in three games. Both teams finished out their regular season last night. Regional play begins next week. Good Luck!

 

February 24

 

·         ISAT reward!  On Friday, March 5, all Edison students who meet the "ISAT Week Behavior Criteria"  will be going to the Beverly Cinema to watch "Percy Jackson and the Olympians:  The Lightning Thief".  Ticket price is $6.00.  Permission slips are due Wed., March 3.  Permission slips are being sent home on Wed., Feb. 24.  Check both sides for info concerning behavior criteria, ticket prices, snack prices, etc.

 

·         Orchestra Honors: Several orchestra students received top honors at solo and ensemble contest last weekend.  Aashika Ashok, Jonlyn Miller and Yun-Ah Yang all received a "one" rating for their solo performances.  Congratulations!

 

·         PTA Reflections Award: Congratulations to 7th grader Alic Trellakis who received an Honorable Mention Award for her literature entry at the State PTA Reflections competition.

 

·         Dynamic Program for All Students.: All students are encouraged to join NSBE Jr. (National Society of Black Engineers) which meets on Wednesdays after school in Mr. Kuppler’s room (#324). Students will participate in experiments and demonstrations at the first part of the club starting at 2:45 p.m..  By 3:30-4:15 p. students will concentrate on homework, learn study tips, and have the opportunity to ask questions about high school and college.  If this opportunity is something you would like your student to participate in, simply fill out the attached form and have your student give it to Mrs. Mastny in the community center (right above the cafeteria at Edison.)

 

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

 

·         World Languages Survey: The Mellon Building is conducting a survey to gather public input on the World Languages program. Please visit http://www.champaignschools.org/worldlangsurveys.html to provide your input. There are surveys for parents, current and former students, and various categories of educators.

·         Uni High School: Transcript releases for University Laboratory High School must be turned in to the Ms. Cannon in the Main office no later than Friday February 26th.

 

·         Volleyball: Edison’s 7th grade volleyball team beat Jefferson last Thursday night.  The 8th graders lost their games to Jefferson. Both teams play again this week.

 

·         Athletic Events for the week:

Sat., Feb. 27  Wrestling regionals at Mahomet (time TBA)

Mon., March 1  7VB regional game at Jefferson vs Franklin, 6:00 pm

·         Urgent Need for Volunteers! The PTSA has an urgent need for volunteers to serve as hall monitors during ISAT week. Dates and times are below. If you are available, please contact Jennifer Clarke at jenniferandjohnc@sbcglobal.net with your contact information and times that you are available to volunteer.

·         The Comet Cazzette:  Edison’s talented 8th grade Explorers have started a newspaper, The Comet Cazzette, which will be printed for everyone to read once a month. Each team’s Language Arts Writing teacher will receive copies of the newspaper for students to read, share, discuss, etc.  The Comet Cazzette team wants your feedback, so please write comments about things you love, dislike, and/or want to see added into the newspaper! We want everyone to be happy to read Edison’s newspaper; therefore, if you have an event, idea, announcement, or something you would like to see included in the paper, please send letters to Mrs. McSurley’s mail box and/or drop by Mrs. McSurley’s classroom in room 340!

·         Creative Writing: The Creative Writing Club will meet on Tuesday, February 23rd from 2:45-4:00 p.m. in room 246.

·         NSBE Jr.: NSBE Jr. is an after school activity that is open to all students at Edison.  The National Society of Black Engineers at U of I welcome everyone to attend this dynamic program.  They meet on Wednesdays after school in Mr. Kuppler’s room (#324) and get to participate in experiments and demonstrations at the first part of the club starting at 2:45 p.m..  By 3:30-4:15 p.m., NSBE Jr. will concentrate on any homework they have as well as learn some study tips and have the opportunity to ask questions about high school and college.  If this opportunity is something you would like your student to participate in, simply fill out the attached form and have your student give it to Mrs. Mastny in the community center (right above the cafeteria at Edison.)

                                                             

·         Wrestling: The Edison wrestling team competes against Mahomet tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. So far the team has had 2 wins and 11 losses. Good luck Comets!

·         The Comet Cazzette:  Edison’s talented 8th grade Explorers have started a newspaper, The Comet Cazzette, which will be printed for everyone to read once a month. Each team’s Language Arts Writing teacher will receive copies of the newspaper for students to read, share, discuss, etc.  The Comet Cazzette team wants your feedback, so please write comments about things you love, dislike, and/or want to see added into the newspaper! ·         Volleyball: On Wednesday, both the 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams beat Franklin, who had an undefeated record going into the competition. In addition, both teams beat Unity on Monday.

 

·         Sports Schedule:

Sat., Feb. 13   WR at Chatham (Bus leaves at 5:30 a.m.)

Thurs., Feb. 18   VB @ Jefferson, 4:15 (bus leaves Edison at 3:30) and WR @ Mahomet, 4:30 (bus leaves Edison at 3:00 then goes to Jefferson then Franklin)

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

·         INRS Expo: The 2010 INRS Naturally Illinois Expo will be Friday and Saturday, March 12th and 13th at the Natural Resources Building, 607-615 East Peabody Drive, Champaign, Illinois. You will find over forty exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on activities of interest to the public, teachers, and students of all levels, especially those who may be interested in science-related careers. ·         Budget Reduction Process Meeting:  The Champaign Community Unit School District #4 encourages anyone interested in providing input into the budget reduction process to attend a meeting on February 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mellon Administrative Center, 703 S. New Street.  A list of the proposed budget cuts may be viewed at www.champaignschools.org. Please see the attached flyer for additional information.

 

·         NSBE Jr.: NSBE Jr. is an after school activity that is open to all students at Edison.  The National Society of Black Engineers at U of I welcome everyone to attend this dynamic program.  They meet on Wednesdays after school in Mr. Kuppler’s room (#324) and get to participate in experiments and demonstrations at the first part of the club starting at 2:45 p.m..  By 3:30-4:15 p.m., NSBE Jr. will concentrate on any homework they have as well as learn some study tips and have the opportunity to ask questions about high school and college.  If this opportunity is something you would like your student to participate in, simply fill out the attached form and have your student give it to Mrs. Mastny in the community center (right above the cafeteria at Edison.)

 

·         Edison Yearbook: The Edison Yearbook staff needs your pictures! Please share your photos with Mrs. Easton via e-mail, disc or flash drive at eastonka@champaignschools.org or room 346. The deadline is February 16. All discs and flash drives will be returned.

 

·         Volleyball: On Wednesday, both the 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams beat Franklin, who had an undefeated record going into the competition. In addition, both teams beat Unity on Monday.

 

·         Sports Schedule:

Sat., Feb. 13   WR at Chatham (Bus leaves at 5:30 a.m.)

Thurs., Feb. 18   VB @ Jefferson, 4:15 (bus leaves Edison at 3:30) and WR @ Mahomet, 4:30 (bus leaves Edison at 3:00 then goes to Jefferson then Franklin)

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

·         INRS Expo: The 2010 INRS Naturally Illinois Expo will be Friday and Saturday, March 12th and 13th at the Natural Resources Building, 607-615 East Peabody Drive, Champaign, Illinois. You will find over forty exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on activities of interest to the public, teachers, and students of all levels, especially those who may be interested in science-related careers. ·         Penny Wars Update:  6th and 7th grade students held a penny war over the past two weeks to raise money for Haiti.  After everything was counted, they raised $2,374.72.  This money will be sent to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Way to go Comets!

 

·         Thank you! A big thank you to Diane Sullivan and also Benchmark Computers for their donations of computers and speakers.

 

·         National Junior Honor Society: Edison's chapter of National Junior Honor Society will be accepting applications for the 2010 National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony.  Application sheets have been mailed home to all individuals who have achieved a 3.0/4.0 GPA.  Applications are due February 22, 2010.  If anyone has questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Cain at cainza@champaignschools.org or Mr. Foli at folibr@champaignschools.org.

 

·         Computer Club: The next Computer Club meeting will be March 1st.
