It is our mission at Edison Middle School to work collaboratively to place the focus on the academic, social, and emotional needs of each individual student first and ensure that ALL students are prepared for post-secondary education.

•He/she has not served the assigned detentions minutes

•He/she is failing one or more classes

•Administration places him/her on social probation.

PARCC Tests: PARCC tests are new this year.  A lot of details are below, but you can visit this site: http://practice.parcc.testnav.com for a practice test and even more information.

In 2010, Illinois began implementing the new Illinois Learning Standards based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  The Common Core provides a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics as they progress through grades K-12 across all states.  PARCC, aligned to the CCSS, will be used to gauge how well students are mastering the CCSS and how ready they are for college and career.

The new Illinois Leaning Standards based on the CCSS are designed to enhance student learning, relevant to the real world, robust and ensuring a U.S. workforce that can compete in the global economy. The CCSS emphasize fewer topics and stress not only procedural skills, but also problem solving and critical thinking. The CCSS are not a curriculum; rather a tool to build knowledge from grade to grade, enabling students to master important concepts before moving on to others.

The new PARCC summative assessments will address concerns with measuring student's ability to memorize facts rather than their critical thinking and knowledge application skills.  Unlike ISAT, PARCC will be administered more than once during the school year. These assessments will provide teachers, parents and students a clearer, more detailed picture of students' strengths and areas that need improvement.  Educators and parents will be able to tailor their attention to a student's individual needs. The PARCC assessments also give ISBE the opportunity to compare Illinois students' progress on a national scale and ensure that we are keeping pace with the goal of college and career readiness.

The summative assessment is comprised of two components- a Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) and an End-of-Year Assessment (EOY). The PBA is designed to be completed at roughly 75% of instruction and the EOY at 90%.  Students will take both components; and the scores will be combined to render a final Summative score.

TESTING WINDOWS:

  Part I (PBA-75%):  March 9-13

  Part II (EOY-90%):   May 11-15

Each student will be required to take the two components of the summative test, the Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) and the End-of-Year Assessment (EOY).  Depending on the technology capabilities of the district, students at a grade level may test using a computer-based test or a paper/pencil test.   It is estimated that it will take 4.5 hours to complete an entire academic part (English 4.5 hours for all sessions and Math 4.5 hours for all sessions).

·         ENGLISH (PBA-3 Sessions, EOY-2 Sessions)

Literary Analysis (120 min.-40 min. built in extended time)

Research Simulation (120 min.-40 min. built in extended time)

Narrative Writing (75 min.-25 min. built in extended time)

·         MATH (PBA-2 Sessions, EOY-2 Sessions

Conceptual Knowledge & Skills (60 min.-20 min. built in extended time)

Reasoning & Modeling (60 min.-20 min. built in extended time)

Performance Based Assessment (PBA): ELA/Literacy-focus on writing effectively when analyzing test, read   complex text independently, write effectively to sources, build and present knowledge through research, persuasive arguments, vocabulary.  Math-focus on applying skills, concepts, and understanding to solve multi-step problems requiring abstract reasoning, precision,  perseverance and strategic use of tools, reason mathematically, model   real-world problems, fluency, data analysis, geometry, number sense

End-of-Year (EOY): ELA/Literacy-focus on reading comprehension. Math-demonstrate further conceptual understanding of the Major Content and Additional and Supporting Content of the grade and mathematical fluency
