[Edison-PTSA] EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS--MAY 24

May 24

.        Curtis McKinney Memorial Garden: The dedication of the Curtis McKinney Memorial Garden will take place Monday,May 24th in the front of the school on Green St. If anyone is interested in donating towards the memorial fund they can send checks to Edison Middle School. If anyone would like to attend this ceremony we will start at 9:30a.m. 

.         Important Dates:   Monday May 24th  Early out: 11:10   Thursday May 27th 8th grade promotion   Friday May 28th 2:10 dismissal   June 1st Last day of school; 9:10 dismissal.


.        Volleyball Challenge;  Monday, May 24th the 8th grade boys basketball team has challenged the 8th grade volleyball team in a volleyball game.  The game will take place during 8th and 9th hours on Mon. (SIP day).  Players will need to wear practice clothing.


       Basketball Challenge: Tuesday, May 25th the 7th grade boy's basketball team vs the 8th grade boy's basketball team game will take place at 3:00 pm in the north gym.  Admission is $1.00.  Game will be over at 4:00 pm.


May 19


        Medication:  All students that have medication in the main office need to pick them up before the last day of school.

        Teaching Award:  Congratulations to Edison eighth grade teacher and athletic director, Mrs. Jackie Borchardt, who has just received the NewsChannel 15 and Busey Bank Golden Apple Award! She will be honored as a teacher who makes a difference on Thursday, May 20 during the 6 p.m. newscast.

 
.         Box Tops/Soup Labels:  Remember to send in your box tops and soup labels before the end of the school year. Your child can turn them in to either their homeroom teacher or the band room. Don't forget to continue saving these during the summer too!

 .     Cross Country (XC): Summer practices for Edison's cross country team will begin Monday, June 21st at Hessel Park and will continue all summer with Monday practices at Hessel Park and Wednesday practices at Morrissey Park. Practice times are 6:00-6:45 p.m. There will be a 25 minute meeting on the first day. If you are a returning member that sat through the meeting last year, you don't need to attend just get there at 6:25 p.m. to sign papers and go for a short run. You MUST begin practicing with the team by August 1st and have all paperwork in by that date or YOU WILL NOT BE ON THE TEAM.  If you know of students interested in XC that would not get this information, pass it on to them.  Any questions, feel free to call the XC coach, Julie Mills, at 778-8161 or email <mailto:julmills@gmail.com>julmills@gmail.com. Graduating 8th graders who just want to have fun, can come and run this summer too.

The cost is $50 and checks should be made out to the Central Volleyball Booster Club. You can register by mailing a check and the bottom portion of the attached form to: Kristine Anderson, Central Athletic Office, 610 W. .         Wax Museum:  May 21st Navigator Team students of Edison Middle School will present a Wax Museum of important figures from the 20th Century during Periods 3 and 4 in the main hallway by the auditorium and library.  All are welcome to attend.

 Period 3's Wax Museum will begin at 9:35 and end at 10:05.

 Period 4's Wax Museum will begin at 10:20 and end at 10:50.

.         Student Council:  will be meeting May 18th and 19th (Tuesday and Wednesday) in room 234.


.         Parent meeting for 2010 – 2011 Baseball, Cross Country and Girls Basketball: There will be an informational meeting for parents/students who will be attending Edison next fall and are interested in Cross Country and trying out for Baseball and Girls Basketball. The meeting will be Thurs., June 3 in the Edison cafeteria at 5:00 pm. Cross Country season begins Monday, August 2 (anyone interested in Cross Country MUST begin practicing this day).  Mandatory parent meeting will be Monday, Aug. 2 (time and place TBA). Baseball tryouts will be held Monday, Aug. 2 and Tuesday, Aug. 3 from 4 – 6 pm at Zahnd Park. Mandatory parent meeting will be at 5:30 pm on Wed., Aug. 4 (location TBA)

 

Girl's Basketball tryouts will be:

 

Monday, Aug. 30 for any 6th grader interested in trying out for the 7th grade team and for 8th grade team

Tuesday, Aug. 31 for 7th grade team and 8th grade team

Wed., Sept. 1 for 7th grade team

Thurs., Sept. 2 will be mandatory parent meeting at 5:30 pm in the Edison Cafeteria

 

Deadlines for required paperwork (current physical, Champaign Unit 4 Insurance and Participation form and written proof of insurance):

Baseball and Cross Country:  Friday, July 16

Girl's Basketball:  Friday, Aug. 13

 

 

.         Intramural Golf: Monday, May 17–– Thursday, May 20, 2010. Come one day, two days, three days or all four days Edison students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade can participate no matter the skill level. Learn the basics of golf (club use, putting, chipping) and have some fun! Interested golfers will need to be at the University of Illinois Golf Course (by U of I airport) at the club house by 3:15 pm.  Instruction will last from 3:15 until 4:15 pm. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the golf course. Students can bring their own clubs or clubs will be available for use.

 


·         Volunteers Needed for 8th Grade Dance: The 8th Grade school dance at Edison Middle School is Wednesday, May 26 from 7-9 p.m.  Volunteers are needed to help with concessions and monitor the gym. If you would like to volunteer, please email Mr. Jesse Guzman know at <mailto:guzmanje@champaignschools.org>guzmanje@champaignschools.org. Volunteers should arrive at 6:40 p.m. and check in at the concession table in the cafeteria. Basic Information about the 8th Grade Dance: *Only 8th Grade Edison students will be allowed, *Admission is Free, *Students must have a signed permission slip and their student ID, *No one is permitted in after 7:30 p.m.,*Snacks and Cake are free, and *All students must remain in the building until the dance is dismissed at 9 p.m.

·         Summer Reading Book Festival: 100 students are receiving a $7.00 coupon from our principal, Mrs. David, to use toward the purchase of a book at our upcoming May book fair.  The book fair is a Buy One Get One Free fair, so the students will also be able to choose an additional book with the coupon. This is an excellent opportunity to promote summer reading by getting great books into the hands of our students. The spring BOGO (Buy One, Get One FREE) Scholastic Book Fair will be held in Edison's School Library on May 14 - 21. [Edison-PTSA] EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS--MAY 14

.         Student Council:  will be meeting May 18th and 19th (Tuesday and Wednesday) in room 234.


.         Parent meeting for 2010 – 2011 Baseball, Cross Country and Girls Basketball: There will be an informational meeting for parents/students who will be attending Edison next fall and are interested in Cross Country and trying out for Baseball and Girls Basketball. The meeting will be Thurs., June 3 in the Edison cafeteria at 5:00 pm. Cross Country season begins Monday, August 2 (anyone interested in Cross Country MUST begin practicing this day).  Mandatory parent meeting will be Monday, Aug. 2 (time and place TBA). Baseball tryouts will be held Monday, Aug. 2 and Tuesday, Aug. 3 from 4 – 6 pm at Zahnd Park. Mandatory parent meeting will be at 5:30 pm on Wed., Aug. 4 (location TBA)

 

Girl's Basketball tryouts will be:

 

Monday, Aug. 30 for any 6th grader interested in trying out for the 7th grade team and for 8th grade team

Tuesday, Aug. 31 for 7th grade team and 8th grade team

Wed., Sept. 1 for 7th grade team

Thurs., Sept. 2 will be mandatory parent meeting at 5:30 pm in the Edison Cafeteria

 

Deadlines for required paperwork (current physical, Champaign Unit 4 Insurance and Participation form and written proof of insurance):

Baseball and Cross Country:  Friday, July 16

Girl's Basketball:  Friday, Aug. 13

 

 

.         Intramural Golf: Monday, May 17–– Thursday, May 20, 2010. Come one day, two days, three days or all four days Edison students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade can participate no matter the skill level. Learn the basics of golf (club use, putting, chipping) and have some fun! Interested golfers will need to be at the University of Illinois Golf Course (by U of I airport) at the club house by 3:15 pm.  Instruction will last from 3:15 until 4:15 pm. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the golf course. Students can bring their own clubs or clubs will be available for use.

 

·         20th Century Shakers and Movers Wax Museum: The 8th Grade Navigators team will be having 20th Century Shakers and Movers Wax Museum on Friday, May 21st during 3rd and 4th periods.  Visitors are welcome.

 

·         Volunteers Needed for 8th Grade Dance: The 8th Grade school dance at Edison Middle School is Wednesday, May 26 from 7-9 p.m.  Volunteers are needed to help with concessions and monitor the gym. If you would like to volunteer, please email Mr. Jesse Guzman know at <mailto:guzmanje@champaignschools.org>guzmanje@champaignschools.org. Volunteers should arrive at 6:40 p.m. and check in at the concession table in the cafeteria. Basic Information about the 8th Grade Dance: *Only 8th Grade Edison students will be allowed, *Admission is Free, *Students must have a signed permission slip and their student ID, *No one is permitted in after 7:30 p.m.,*Snacks and Cake are free, and *All students must remain in the building until the dance is dismissed at 9 p.m.

 

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

 

·         Central Mini-Maroons Volleyball Camp:  All middle school girls are encouraged to attend the Mini-Maroons Volleyball Camp at Central High School on June 23-25. The camp is for younger girls who want to learn volleyball skills. More information will be available soon.

·         Summer Reading Book Festival: 100 students are receiving a $7.00 coupon from our principal, Mrs. David, to use toward the purchase of a book at our upcoming May book fair.  The book fair is a Buy One Get One Free fair, so the students will also be able to choose an additional book with the coupon. This is an excellent opportunity to promote summer reading by getting great books into the hands of our students. The spring BOGO (Buy One, Get One FREE) Scholastic Book Fair will be held in Edison's School Library on May 14 - 21.
