EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

November 9

 

·         PTSA Meeting: The Edison PTSA will meet tomorrow evening (November 10) in the Edison Library.  Come at 6:45 p.m. for refreshments. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome!

 

·         Wrestling and Volleyball Physicals due this Friday: Students who plan to wrestle or tryout for volleyball must turn in their physicals, Champaign Unit 4 forms and written proof of insurance to Ms. Borchardt in room 122 by Friday, November 13.

 

·         Athletic Calendar:

·         November 9: Boys basketball team plays Franklin. Everyone is asked to wear RED that night so we can make a “SEA of RED.”  Everyone in red will get into the game for half price.

·         November 12: Girls basketball at North Ridge; Boys basketball at Edison versus Rantoul. Games begin at 4:15 p.m. in the north gym

·         November 16: Boys basketball at Heyworth at 6 p.m.; Cross country banquet at Stone Creek Church in Urbana at 5:30 p.m.

·         November 17: Girls basketball at Edison versus Chiddix. Game time is 4:15 p.m.

·         November 18: Girls basketball at Bloomington. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

·         November 19: Last home game for the girls basketball team. They play South View at 4:15 p.m. Come cheer them on!

 

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

 

·         DonorsChoose.Org: Looking for an easy way to support Champaign teachers? Check out http://www.donorschoose.org to see project requests for Unit 4 classrooms. The Web site is managed by a non-profit organization that pairs classroom needs with donors who can support them. A number of Edison teachers have projects listed. Go to the Website and search Illinois, then Champaign, and Unit 4 if you want to specifically support Unit 4 schools. Currently there are 22 project requests from teachers in Champaign.

 

November 6

 

·         Computer Club Update: Computer Club will meet Monday, November 9 from 2:45-3:30 p.m. Three current student members will be teaching this session!  Computer Club will not meet on November 16th , but on November 23 and December 7. Students will learn about eToys from guest teacher, Kathleen Harness.  Put those dates on your calendar!  Bring a friend to the club -  new members are always welcome.

 

·         Creative Writing Club: Edison’s Creative Writing Club (CWC) will meet on Tuesdays after school, November 10th through February 23rd.   The first meeting is next week. Meetings will be held in room 246 from 2:45 - 4:00 p.m. Activities will include a teacher-led creative writing exercise, time for writing, reading a variety of poems and stories, and a structured time for getting and giving feedback on each other’s writing. Students wishing to attend must have turned in a permission slip.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

 

·         Champaign Park District Boys Basketball: Any  6th grade boys who are not on a school basketball team  are welcome to try out for the Douglass Select Basketball Team.  Tryouts are at Douglass Community Center, November 7, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.  No advanced registration is necessary.  There is a $50 fee for the program.  The team will play in a league and also in a tournament.  More information can be found in the Champaign Park District FALL FunFormation Guide: http://www.champaignparkdistrict.com/brochure.htm.

 

·         Free Math Seminar for Parents: Back by popular demand is Sylvan’s “Forgotten Math” seminar for Parents.  Stop by the Sylvan Learning Center in Champaign on Tuesday, November 17th at 6:30 p.m. for a refresher course in all of those difficult math concepts you may have forgotten since you were in middle and high school.  Sylvan instructors will give parents the opportunity to re-learn basic concepts, ask questions, and register to win tons of FREE stuff.  You must register for this free event. ·         Upcoming Event for Parents: The Center for Education in Small Urban Communities will hold “Pathways to Success” on Monday, November 16, from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Champaign Public Library in Rooms A&B of the Robeson Pavilion.  It is a resource fair focused on providing information about how parents can help their children achieve goals beyond middle and high school.  They will have representatives from area schools, colleges, and community organizations to answer questions and address topics such as keys to college readiness, motivating your child to succeed, finding meaningful enrichment opportunities, parenting tips for positive outcomes, and more.  For additional information, please contact Lila Moore at lfmoore@ad.uiuc.edu or 333-4687.

·         Thank you! The PTSA would like to thank all parents for their overwhelming generosity in helping make this year's teacher appreciation dinner a tremendous success.  We have already started to receive personal thank you cards from the teachers about your kindness and support. It is the type of support that helps Edison become a better place to learn!  Again, thank you!!

 

·         Wrestling Coach: If you or anyone you know might be interested in being the head coach for our middle school wrestling program please contact Jackie Borchardt (borchaja@champaignschools.org or 377 – 8584) as soon as possible.  Wrestling begins November 30. 

 

·         Mrs. Parmer's Assignments Blog: Mrs. Parmer wants all Navigator parents to know that they can see her weekly plan for their student on-line at http://edisonmrsparmer.wordpress.com    It should be updated weekly.  Parents can click the tab indicating the period their student has reading to see an updated assignment log; also, they can respond or ask questions at this blog site.

 

·         NSBE Jr.: All students who are interested in learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics are encouraged to join NSBE Jr., a club offered by the U of I chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. Edison students will meet on Wednesdays, after school from 2:45-4:15 p.m. Students must turn in a signed permission slip (see attached) as soon as possible  to Mrs. Mastny in the Community Center or to any teacher.

 

·         Parent Building Council Rep Needed: Edison staff and the PTSA are looking for a parent who can serve as Building Council Representative. The Building Council discusses issues related to the school at monthly meetings. The PTSA has one representative who can attend some meetings but needs another, especially someone who is available in the afternoon. Meetings are on these days/times: Monday, November 30 at 3 p.m., Monday, January 25 at 7 a.m., Monday, February 22 at 7 a.m., Monday, March 29 at 7 a.m., Monday, April 26 at 3 p.m., and Monday, May 17 at 7 a.m. You would coordinate with the PTSA to report back information from the meeting. ·         More Hand Sanitizer: Thanks for your donations of hand sanitizer. More is still needed. Please drop off bottles of hand sanitizer in the main office. It is distributed throughout the building for students to use.
