Edison's Mission

It is our mission at Edison Middle School to work collaboratively to place the focus on the academic, social, and emotional needs of each individual student first and ensure that ALL students are prepared for post-secondary education.

Teacher Appreciation-cookies! Edison PTSA's teacher appreciation event for February is all about cookies.  Please share 2 dozen of your favorite sweet treats; send to school on Wednesday morning (February 18).  We can still use a few more people to bring goodies:   www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C054AA8AA2EA7FB6-edison Thank you for your support of our teachers, staff, and PTSA.

PTSA Meeting Minutes:  notes from the January 2015 PTSA meeting are attached.  Mark your calendars for the next meeting: Monday February 23, 6 pm in the Edison library.  Agenda is also attached.

Meatheads Fundraiser for Edison Bands: the Edison band program is having a fundraiser at Meatheads, 1305 S. Neil St. on Sunday March 1, from 11am-10pm. We'll receive a very generous 15% of the sales if you bring in the MH flyer, attached here and available at the  EMS Bands Facebook page. So get to Meatheads and burger down!

Band Trip to Disney Update: For those who missed the Edison Band Disney Trip meeting Wednesday 2/11, student pictures will be taken at the school in the near future. Any needed chaperone pictures will be arranged as well. Details from the meeting will be sent to the band maillist shortly, but if you have not been receiving messages, please email frankwells@sbcglobal to get updates and to ensure that you are on the maillist.

Yearbook Pictures needed! We need candid photos from Edison clubs, choir, band, strings, and sports. Please send them or share them with Mrs. Easton via: CD, flash drive, email (eastonka@champaignschools.org), or Google drive (eastonka@u4sd.org).  *Please include the activity and grade level of students participating.

PARCC Testing: This year, PARCC will replace ISAT's. Edison students will take the PARCC assessment March 2-6. This is a high-stakes test, like ISAT's, so please help set our students up for success by helping them get sufficient sleep at night, breakfast, and positive encouragement! See the attached document for more information as it relates to PARCC. Feel free to contact Ms. Schoonover if you have any questions or concerns: e-mail schoonan@champaignschools.org or by phone at 351-3771.

Prospective Central High School Students: The marching band is a diverse group of students who numbered close to 200 during the 2014 season. The band continues to gain in popularity due to the challenging and fun opportunity it provides to make music at a high level and to be part of the friendliest group of students at Central HS. Each year we welcome many new members including kids who have never played an instrument before! There really is not a pre-requisite course for this class! We accept everyone who wants to be part of The Power and Class of Central Illinois! The only requirements are a commitment to hard work and the desire to achieve. Color Guard and Drum Line clinics are coming up soon; if you're even a little bit interested, come to the (free) clinics and see what it's all about. See attachment for more information on Marching Band, Color Guard, and Drum Line, including clinic dates/times/locations.

We need your feedback! The Illinois State Board of Education conducts a survey every other year to help drive school improvement initiatives at the state, district, and school level. Your feedback is completely confidential. Please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/survey/parent/login/ to log on and take the survey.

Box Tops for Education: Mrs. Wells is still collecting Box Tops for the school.  Please send yours to Mrs. Wells or give them to any teacher to put in her mailbox.

National Junior Honor Society: Invitations to join National Junior Honor Society went out recently to all eligible students.  If your student is interested in joining National Junior Honor Society, Student Activity Forms can be obtained from Mr. Cain in room 128, in the main office, or downloaded from the attached PDF.  All completed forms are due to Mr. Cain by Monday, March 2, 2015.  Any questions can be directed to Mr. Cain at cainza@champaignschools.org.

Edison PTSA recently awarded 15 mini-grants to teachers and staff for classroom needs, extracurricular club activities, and learning software!  If you'd like to help PTSA develop additional fundraising events, contact Gretchen Pein at gretchenpein@gmail.com

Extracurricular Clubs: attached is the official list of Edison student clubs and extracurricular activities, including sponsor contact information.

PTA Reflections: Thank you to all students who participated in this year's PTA Reflections contest. Congratulations to the following Edison students whose Reflections entries advanced to State: Grace Rispoli, Leah Courtney, Sara Dickerson, Vanessa Lopez, Michaela Patton, Sia Dey Koontz, and Emily Anderson. Mark your calendar for March 28, 2015 for the SPOTLIGHT event, presented by Illinois PTA in partnership with Millikin University to celebrate children from across the state. This free event is open to all children in Illinois. The afternoon, held on Millikin University's Campus in Decatur, Illinois, celebrates Reflections artists, scholarship winners, and students who serve their communities. The afternoon will include workshops for children and adults presented by faculty and students from Millikin University, an art gallery of almost 500 Reflections pieces, and a reception with light refreshments. For updates and registration information to this amazing event, please visit www.illinoispta.org/spotlight.html

College Gear Fridays: Students, wear your Avid or college gear on Friday.  Every Friday!
