Edison's Mission

It is our mission at Edison Middle School to work collaboratively to place the focus on the academic, social, and emotional needs of each individual student first and ensure that ALL students are prepared for post-secondary education.

 

PTSA update: Congratulations to our PTSA officers for 2015-2016: Gretchen Pein (Pres), Jen Carson (VP), Karyn Miller (Secretary) and Jill Daly (Treasurer). We still need a Teacher Appreciation coordinator for next year as well as a vice-president who will take over as president the following year. These are great ways to get involved in your child's middle school experience and meet other parents! Congratulations to our 7th grade girls track team as they placed 2nd at the sectional meet.  This is our first sectional plaque for track.  Congratulations to the following track members who have advanced to State which is this Friday and Saturday in East Peoria: Kayla Wilson in the shot put, Chanice Willis in the 400, 100 and long jump, Jayden Wilson  in the 100, and Chanice Willis , Jayden Wilson, Naomi DuPree , Taylor Davis and Kelsey Wells in the 4x100.  

Thank you to all the groups that participated in the Memorial Sculpture competition.  After tallying the votes the winner is .... #19 entitled "Trapped", memorializing victims of bullying who felt so hopeless, they decided to take their own life. We all should remember the power of our words and their damaging effects. Congratulations to group #19 - Sara Perkinson, Ceci Allen, Livi Foster and Naomi Gillet. Thank you for your hard work and research and bringing light to this very important topic.

Tech Club: Today! Come to Lab 134 from 2:45-3:45 it is free choice week! Game development, coding, Google Map exploration, Arduino work and more.  Come and give it a try! See you there! 

 

Edison GSA will have its final meeting this Friday after school in Mr. Newman's room. Everyone is welcome!

8th graders: In order for you to participate in the end of the year activities you must not receive more than one level 1 infraction, any DR's and/or be suspended between May 13  until May 29.  You must also have taken care of any lost class books and/or library books.

Don't forget your three permits  (Hessel Park, 8th grade dance permit and permit to leave early on May 29) are due to your first hour teacher by Friday, May 22.

8th graders planning to attend the 8th grade dance must have their school ID so make sure you have your ID.  

8th grade boys heading to Centennial next year and are interested in playing soccer can pick up a flier about summer camp June 29th - July 31. You can get a flier from any 8th grade teachers, PE teachers or Ms. Borchardt.

 

More for future Centennial students: Due to a band concert being moved to the gym on Thursday, open gym for girls will be cancelled. Centennial open gym will resume next Thursday the 28th from 3:30-5pm. Middle School 8th grade girls who will be attending Centennial next year are welcome to come.

Any young lady interested in attending volleyball camp at St. Thomas Moore coached by our very own Coach Bergman can pick up a flier on the athletic bulletin board - teachers the flier is attached for you to make copies as well.

Champaign Central High School is hosting boys basketball open gyms on May 21st, 27th, and 28th from 7:30-9:30PM.  An informational meeting for June boys basketball practices will be held at 6:30PM on Wednesday, May 27th @ 6:30PM in the library at Central. 

Any young lady interested in attending basketball camp at the U of I can pick up a flier from the athletic bulletin board.

Any current 6th and 7th grader interested in baseball, cross country and girls basketball you must have the following 4 pieces of paperwork turned in to Ms. Borchardt by July 10 for Baseball and Cross Country then July 17 for Girls Basketball.

1. current physical - physicals you turned in last year are expired so you will need a new one.

2.  completed Champaign Unit 4 form

3.  Complete waiver

4.  copy of your insurance or medical card

Baseball tryouts will be held at Zahnd Pak on Monday, Aug. 3 and Tues., Aug. 4 - attendance at both days of tryouts is required.  Stop by the athletic bulletin board to pick up a flier which tells you what time you need to be at tryouts.  Parent meeting will be Tues., Aug. 4 at 5:30 pm at Edison in the cafeteria.

Cross Country runners - your season begins Monday, Aug. 3 - you are required to begin practicing with the team at this time.  Parent meeting will be at 5:30 pm at Edison in the cafeteria.  If you are interested in the summer cross country running program you can pick up a flier on the athletic bulletin board outside room 122.

Girls Basketball - tryouts will be held Monday, Aug. 31 and Tuesday, Sept. 1 - attendance at both days of tryouts is required.  Exact times for the teams will be announced when school begins in the fall.

8th Grade Promotion has been set for 9 am on May 29.  Each family will receive two tickets to attend the promotion (tickets are required).

Special Notes: 

    *Siblings of 8th graders who are in 6th and/or 7th grade are not allowed to 

            attend promotion (unless of course the parent wishes to use one of their

            two tickets for the sibling).

   *Each 8th grader will be given two tickets for parents/family members to use

            for attendance at promotion - anyone attending promotion must have a 

             ticket in order to gain access to the auditorium

The 8th grade teachers went over expectations with the 8th grade class recently.  Here are a few of the expectations.  If you have any questions please email or call Jackie.

1.  Students must be in attendance for promotion practice on Thurs., May 28 from 1:15 until 2:40 pm

2.  Permit to leave school early on Friday, May 29 must be turned in to Ms. Borchardt

3.  Dress for the day:

·         Girls:  nice dress, skirt, capri's, dress pants, shorts etc. - no prom dresses.  Long dresses could cause problems with the stairs since students will be going up and down stairs.  If the dress is strapless or has spaghetti straps then a sweater or jacket will need to be worn (school rules still apply)

·         boys: dress pants, shirt and tie, dress shirt, polo shirt, shorts 

4.  The day of promotion we ask family members to not bring flowers due to other guest possibly having allergies plus the students will have nowhere to put them during the promotion ceremony, no balloons since they block the view of others and no limo's dropping off or picking up at Edison.

5.  Doors to enter day of: door #12 on State Street (we can us the library parking lot) or door #1 inside fenced in playground.  Once in the building you will be asked for your ticket.

6. Doors will be open for admittance at 8:30 am

7.  Please hold your applause till the staff member has finished reading his/her list of students.  This way ALL parents can hear their child's name being read.

8th Grade Calendar of Events: a schedule of events specific to 8th graders is attached. 

Box Tops for Education: Mrs. Wells is still collecting Box Tops for the school.  Please send yours to Mrs. Wells or give them to any teacher to put in her mailbox.

Edison PTSA awarded 15 mini-grants to teachers and staff for classroom needs, extracurricular club activities, and learning software!  If you'd like to help PTSA develop additional fundraising events, contact Gretchen Pein at gretchenpein@gmail.com

 

College Gear Fridays: Students, wear your Avid or college gear on Friday.  Every Friday!

 

Social Probation: Please talk to your students about social probation, which is exclusion from participation in and/or attendance at an extracurricular school-sanctioned activity like ball games, concerts and dances.  A student will be placed on social probation if/when:

•He/she has not served the assigned detentions minutes

•He/she is failing one or more classes

•Administration places him/her on social probation.​
