EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

September 30

 

·         Leadership Academy for Students: During Convocation today, Edison students will learn about a wonderful leadership opportunity.   Sigma Phi Epsilon, a fraternity at the University of Illinois, will partner with Edison to create a Leadership Academy.  Sixty students (30 seventh graders and 30 eighth graders) will meet for three different 1 ½ hour sessions.  The attached Sig Ep Application has more details about how students may qualify.  The first Academy session will be at the Champaign Public Library on Wednesday, November 3.

 

·         Spiritwear: PTSA representatives will be handing out Edison Spiritwear at school over the lunch hour today.  

 

·         Computer Club: The 2nd meeting of Edison’s Computer Club will be today (Wednesday) after school until 3:30 p.m.  They will be creating stick animation.  All students are welcome!

 

·         Picture Day: Edison will hold picture day on October 2.  Students will get their pictures taken during their PE class. Your student should have received a packet with more information including an order form.

 

·         Carpentry Skills Needed: The Physical Education department at Edison has a ping pong table that is in need of repair.  If you or someone you know has carpentry skills and can help out, please email Marilyn Mastny at mastnyma@champaignschools.org.

 

September 28

 

·         Student Council: Student Council will meet Wednesday, September 30 in room 234 from 2:45 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.  Our next big topic will be the Eastern Illinois Food Bank Food Drive starting in October.  Also, we will be participating in the Eastern Illinois Food Bank’s “Food Fight”  which is a contest between area schools to raise the most money.  Updates on the leading schools will be announced on WCIA’s Morning Show each morning from October 5 - 16 by Rob and Ann.  Please encourage your children to donate their loose change rather than buying extra chips or drinks from the vending machines.  Each homeroom will have a teacher collecting the money.

Jenny Redden, coordinator for the dance, is looking for a minimum of 25 volunteers to help sell concessions and monitor the gym. Volunteers should arrive at 5:45 p.m. and check in at the concession table in the cafeteria. There will be a table with name tags and duty assignments. If you would like to volunteer, please let Jenny know by contacting her directly, jenlyn.redden@gmail.com. Some kids prefer that their parents stay in the cafeteria and not be in the gym, just let her know.

o    2 money takers- keeping all children in the gym until 6:30 p.m.

o    2 main door monitors- helping to keep the lines straight and orderly until everyone is check in and not letting anyone leave until the dance is over

o    8 concession volunteers- selling of the sugary treats

o    8 gym monitors- making sure the dancing is appropriate and there are no problems in the gym

o    2 floaters - walking the halls, gym, and concessions area

o    2 restroom monitors - You can trade off between the restroom and gym duties during the evening 

o    2 parking lot monitors - When the dance is over, helping with the flow and supervision of those waiting outside.

 

Everything will be set up and ready to go! Please reply to Jenny Redden, jenlyn.redden@gmail.com, if you can help. Tell friends who may also want to help. The dance is sponsored by the PTSA and is a great way to raise money for the school.

·         Cross Country: Congratulations to Ashton Hyatt for winning a medal at the cross country meet in Peoria on Friday. The cross country team competes again tomorrow (Tuesday) in Tolono.

 

September 25

 

·         Fall Holiday: There is no school on Monday, September 28. It is a fall holiday.

 

·         Reflections: Are you creative?  Participate in the 2009-10 PTA Reflections Program. Create a work of art (dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts) that illustrates the theme "Beauty is...."   Entry forms and official rules are available in the school office.  The deadline for entries is Tuesday, October 20th at 4:00 p.m.  Questions?   Contact Lauren Smith at 352-0809 or Laurentols@aol.com.

[Edison-PTSA] Request for Volunteers: Edison Dance this Friday

Volunteers Needed for School Dance this Friday, October 2nd

 

The first school dance at Edison Middle School is this Friday, October 2, 2009 from 6-8 p.m.  It is usually the largest of the year and I am looking for a minimum of 25 volunteers to help sell concessions and monitor the gym. Volunteers should arrive at 5:45 p.m. and check in at the concession table in the cafeteria. I will have a table with name tags and duty assignments.

 

If you would like to volunteer, please let me know contact me directly, jenlyn.redden@gmail.com. Some kids prefer that their parents stay in the cafeteria and not be in the gym, just let me know. 

 

I am looking for the following:

 

2 money takers- keeping all children in the gym until 6:30 p.m.

·         Science Olympiad: The first Science Olympiad meeting will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Ms. Mathis's room after school on Thursday, September 24.  This meeting is for students only.  The meeting will last approximately 30 minutes.  If a student was not able to attend the informational meeting on the 17th, he/she must pick up the paperwork given out at that meeting from Ms. Mathis prior to Thursday. 

 

·         PTSA: There will be a PTSA Executive Board Meeting on Thursday, September 24 at noon.  We will be meeting in the private room at Za's on Neil.  This meeting is open to all Edison PTSA members.  Please R.S.V.P. to Jennifer Clarke at jenniferandjohnc@sbcglobal.net if you plan on attending.

 

·         Boys Basketball Tryouts:

Boys in 6th, 7th and 8th grade must have the following paperwork turned in to Ms. Borchardt (room 122) by Friday, October 9 in order to tryout:

     1.  Current physical

     2. Completed Champaign Unit 4 Insurance and Participation form

     3.  Written proof of insurance

·         Monday, October 19: 6th grade boys from 3:00 until 4:30 pm in the north gym; 8th grade boys from 7:30 until 9:00 pm in the north gym

·         Girls Basketball: The Girls Basketball team plays North Ridge at home at 4:15 p.m. today.

 

·         Cross Country: Congratulations to the following students who won medals on Saturday at the Mahomet meet: Hannah Shinew, Jessica Devine, Henry Sills, Payton Woods, Isaac Kasten, Neda Sroka, Hannah Wright, Ellie Walker, Reis DeSantis, Nimesh Avashia, and Deonte Young. The team competes Friday, September 25 at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

 

·         Edison Baseball: Congratulations to Edison’s baseball team. They finished a nice season on Saturday, September 19.

 

 

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

 

·         Boundaries for High Schools: There will be a Community Forum about high school redistricting on October 12 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Mellon Building.  Dr. Jerome McKibben, demographer, and Dr. Michael McFarland, assistant superintendent, will review District alternatives with implementation plan pros and cons.  Community members will be given the opportunity to offer input.  The vote on the high school redistricting option will occur at the November 9th Board meeting. Implementation of the redistricting will begin during the 2010-11 school year.  All parents of Unit 4 students are encouraged to attend the community forums and school Board meetings.

 

·         Health & Wellness Showcase 2009! Thursday, September 24 from 2 - 6 p.m. at the U of I Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) at 201 East Peabody, Champaign. For more information go to http://www.hwshowcase.illinois.edu/

·         Cross Country: Edison’s cross country team competed at Kickapoo State Park yesterday. The Comets had a number of medal winners: Jessica Devine, Berit Rasmussen, Chloe Lessarus, Maddie Miller, Nialan O'Brien, Neda Sroka, Hannah Wright, Cierra Zimmerman, Ashton Hyatt, Henry Sills, Isaac Kasten, Reis DeSantis, Nimesh Avashia, and Deonte Young. Congratulations to all of the runners! The x-country team competes again on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at Lake of the Woods, Mahomet.

 

·         Mailing List: Please spread the word to other parents in the Edison community who may benefit from receiving the Edison Announcements. They can send an e-mail with “subscribe” in the subject line to ptsa@edison.u4friends.org. Also, if you talk to a parent who is not receiving the announcements but thought they signed up, please ask them to check their “Spam” or “Junk” folder. [Edison-PTSA] Chaperones needed for 8th Grade Navigator Field Trip

The 8th grade Navigators team is going on a field trip to Meadowbrook Park in Urbana on Tuesday, September 22 from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Four adults are needed to chaperone and work with students on prairie field observations. EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

September 18

 

·         Cross Country: Edison’s cross country team competed at Kickapoo State Park yesterday. The Comets had a number of medal winners: Jessica Devine, Berit Rasmussen, Chloe Lessarus, Maddie Miller, Nialan O'Brien, Neda Sroka, Hannah Wright, Cierra Zimmerman, Ashton Hyatt, Henry Sills, Isaac Kasten, Reis DeSantis, Nimesh Avashia, and Deonte Young. Congratulations to all of the runners! The x-country team competes again on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at Lake of the Woods, Mahomet.

 

·         Mailing List: Please spread the word to other parents in the Edison community who may benefit from receiving the Edison Announcements. They can send an e-mail with “subscribe” in the subject line to ptsa@edison.u4friends.org. Also, if you talk to a parent who is not receiving the announcements but thought they signed up, please ask them to check their “Spam” or “Junk” folder. If the announcements are going into that folder, they will need to click on the e-mail and then click on the button to designate the e-mails as “not junk/spam.”

·         Boys Basketball: Tryouts are October 19 and 20 from 7:30 – 9 p.m. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

 

·         Key Communicator Network: The Unit 4 School District has assembled The Key Communicator Network as a way for  the district to share information, collect feedback on program needs, counter misinformation, and keep in touch with the concerns of the community. The network is comprised of a diverse group of people who meet four times per year and receive updates via e-mail. ·         Student Council:  The Student Council will meet on Wednesday, September 16 from 2:45 - 3:30 p.m. in room 234.  They will be working on their election speeches.  Students are encouraged to be on time for the meeting and bring everything with them that they will need to take home.  No one will be going to lockers after the meeting.

 

·         Edison Science Olympiad: There will be a student-parent informational meeting this Thursday, September 17 at 5:00 p.m. for all students interested in being on the Edison Science Olympiad team for the 2009-2010 school year.  The meeting will take place in room 228 (Ms. Mathis's room).  Any student interested in the program should attend this meeting.  Parents are also strongly encouraged to attend.  Please contact Jen Mathis (mathisje@champaignschools.org) with any questions or concerns.

 

·         Need for Hand Sanitizer:  A BIG thank you to the parents who provided bottles of hand sanitizer, but there is still a need for many more. Please donate if you can! The bottles can be dropped off in the main office.

 

·         Edison Baseball: The Edison baseball team finished out their regular season last week. Regional play begins Tuesday, September 15 at 4 p.m. at Zahnd Park in Champaign. Come out and cheer on the Comets. Here are scores from last week:

·         Girls Basketball: Edison’s Girls Basketball team begins its season this week with three home games:  Tuesday, September 15 vs Unity; Wednesday, September 16 vs Urbana; and Thursday, September 17 vs Monticello. Games begin at 4:15 p.m. Admission is $1.00 for students and $2.00 for adults. Go Comets!

 

·         Cross Country: Edison’s cross country team competed in Normal on Saturday. Quite a few runners had PR's by shaving off 30-60 seconds from their previous best this season! Congratulations to Reis DeSantis who received a medal. The x-country team competes again this Saturday, September 19 at 9 a.m. at Lake of the Woods, Mahomet.
