EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

May 6

 

·         Master Schedule Changes for Next Year:  Get more information about the proposed/planned changes in the Master Schedule at Edison for next school year at the May PTSA meeting.  We will meet on Tuesday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Edison Library.  Come at 6:45 p.m. for some informal time with refreshments.

 

·         Registration Dates: Registration for Edison Middle School will be held Wednesday, August 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.- 7 p.m. Other registration information can be found in the attached flyer (registration dates.pdf).

 

·         Eighth Grade Dance: The 8th Grade school dance at Edison Middle School is Wednesday, May 26, 2010 from 7-9 p.m.  A minimum of 10 volunteers is needed to help with concessions and monitoring the gym. If you would like to volunteer, please email Mr. Jesse Guzman know at guzmanje@champaignschools.org. Volunteers should arrive at 6:40 p.m. and check in at the concession table in the cafeteria. I will have nametags and duty assignments. Volunteer duties include helping with concessions, helping check in students, monitoring the front door, halls and bathroom, and watching the dance floor and gym doors (doors are left open to allow air in and out, but no one is allowed to enter or leave). If your child does not want you in the gym, let me know and I can assign you to concessions. Basic Information about the 8th Grade Dance: *Only 8th Grade Edison students will be allowed, *Admission is Free, *Students must have a signed permission slip and their student ID, *No one is permitted in after 7:30 p.m.,*Snacks and Cake are free, and *All students must remain in the building until the dance is dismissed at 9 p.m.

 

·         Bookfair: Edison’s School Library is having a spring BOGO (Buy One, Get One FREE) Scholastic Book Fair, May 14 - 21. ·         Summer Bridge Program for Outgoing 8th Graders: The district is offering a Summer Bridge Program for those students who will be enrolled in English 105 and/or Accelerated Geometry during their Freshman year.  Dates for enrollment are June 14 – July 2 for Eng 105 and July 5  - July 23 for Accelerated Geometry.  Students can sign up for one or both programs.  Each area assigns one  ½  Elective credit towards graduation for High School.  Forms were handed out during the 8th grade Algebra and Reading classes.  We encourage parents to contact Mr. Kampfl in the Counseling office at 351 – 3774 or at kampfltr@champaignschools.org if there are any questions.  Forms are due back to the Counseling Office May 12th.

 

·         Athletic Banquet: Edison’s Athletic Banquet will be held at Stone Creek Church in Urbana on May 10 at 5:30 p.m. All athletes including cross country runners who have the top five GPA’s (they were notified by email) are encouraged to attend. RSVP for the banquet by sending an email to Ms. Borchardt borchaja@champaignschools.org TODAY. Parents are asked to bring the following items for the banquet: Side dish to be served with fried chicken, Dessert, or two 2-liters of a beverage (chilled). ·         Athletic Teams/Tryouts and Paperwork: Baseball tryouts will be held on Monday, August 2 and Tuesday, August 3 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Zahnd Park.  Anyone interested in trying out must have the required paperwork turned in to Ms. Borchardt by Friday, July 16. Tryouts for Girls Basketball will begin on Monday, August 30.  Anyone interested in trying out must have the required paperwork turned in to Ms. Borchardt by Friday, August 13. Cross Country (XC) season begins on Monday, August 2.  Anyone interested in running XC must begin practicing with the team on this date.  Anyone interested in being on the XC team must have the required paperwork turned in to Ms. Borchardt by Friday, July 16. Paperwork required for all teams includes a current physical, completed Champaign Unit 4 Athletic Insurance and Participation form (Champaign Unit 4 athletic participation form.doc) and a copy of insurance.

 

·         Cheerleading Clinic: A Cheerleading Clinic for 6th and 7th grade students be held on Monday, May 10 and Tuesday, May 11 from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. in the north gym.  A flyer and permission slip were handed out Tuesday. Information is also attached (cheerclinic flyer.doc). The permission slip must be turned int to Ms. Borchardt by Thursday, May 6. 

 

·         Boy’s Basketball (BBB) Camp: Basketball camps for boys who will be in 6th, 7th and 8th grade in the fall will be August 2 - August 6.  See attachment for details (2010 Edison Boys Basketball Summer Camp.doc).

 

·         Girl’s Basketball (GBB)Camp: Basketball camp for girls who will be in 6th and 7th grade in the fall will be August 9 - August 13.  See attachment for details (2010 GBB camp flier.doc). Camp for girls who will be in 8th grade in the fall will be announced as soon as possible.

 

     

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

 

·         Unit 4 Administrative Appointments: The Unit 4 School District has announced administrative appointments for schools. Please see the flyer for more details (Administrative Appointments.pdf).

 

·         Centennial Volleyball camp: A flyer for Centennial Volleyball camp for students who will be in 7th and 8th grade in fall can be found on the athletic bulletin board outside room 122 or information can be found at www.centennialathletics.org (go to volleyball) or contact Stan Berman (bergmast@champaignschools.org)

 

·         Jolette Law Basketball Camp:  Information for this camp can be found at www.fightingillini.com/camps.

 

·         Brian Cook's Annual Summer Basketball Camp: If you are interested in receiving information about Brian Cook’s Summer Basketball camp for boys and girls from the ages of 6-15, visit their Web site at www.briancookcamps.com.

 

May 3

 

·         We Love Our Teachers:  This week is national Teacher Appreciation week.  The PTSA would like to show our Edison Teachers how much we appreciate all that they do for our students by doing something nice for them each day.  If you can, please send in any of the items listed below with your child.

Monday – Fruit (apples, bananas, oranges) (because we go bananas over our teachers!)

Tuesday – Chocolate Chip Cookies (to go with the Cookie Cake)

Wednesday – Pizza Lunch (need donations to help pay for the pizza, etc.)

Thursday – Smarties candy (our kids are smart because of our teachers!)

Friday – Ice Cream Treats / Popsicles (we think our teachers are cool!)

·         International Day: Edison’s International Day will be held this Thursday, May 6 from noon to 2:45 p.m. If you can volunteer your time to help, please contact Angie Patton at apatton2@illinois.edu or call 766-8712. This is a fun day for the students to experience different cultures.

 

·         Superstate: Edison’s 7th and 8th grade concert band will perform at Superstate at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, May 7 at 1 p.m. 

 

·          “Day in the Park”: Head out with family and friends to Hessel Park on Saturday, May 8 at 3 pm for this annual concert with performances by the 6th grade concert band, 7th and 8th grade concert band, plus Jazz 1, Jazz 2 and Jazz 3.  Concessions available.  Action inflatables for the kiddos, too!  See the attached flyer for more details. 

 

·         PTSA Needs a Treasurer:  The Edison PTSA is need of a Treasurer for the 2010-2011 school year.  If you have a current 6th grader, please especially consider stepping up.  Training is provided.  In addition, the current Treasurer will still be here next year to help you through it.  Contact Jennifer Clarke (jenniferandjohnc@sbcglobal.net) or Mary Schoen Petersen (schoenpetersen@comcast.net) for more info or if you’re interested.
