August 30

 

• Stranger Danger:  Attached is a PDF with information about an incident near South Side School. Please make sure to read the info and if you have any information about the incident to please contact the police at the numbers listed.
  

 

• Pink Eye: Attached is a letter from the district about a confirmed case of pink eye at Edison.
  

 

• Social Justice Committee: You are invited to be part of the Unit 4 Social Justice Committee.  This committee is a vehicle by which we can work together to systemically improve our school district's ability to support student learning through the lens of social justice.  Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings.  2013-14 committee meeting dates are August 29, September 24, October 29, December 12, January 23, February 25, April 24, and May 22.  All meetings are held from 5:00-6:30pm at the Mellon Board Room.  Please contact Dr. Laura Taylor, Assistant Superintendent for Achievement and Student Services for more information at 217.351.3702 or taylorla@champaignschools.org.           
  

 

• Edison Band Golf Outing: The band program will be hosting a golf outing on Sunday, September 15th on the University of Illinois Blue Course beginning at 1pm.  The cost is $75 per golfer and includes greens fee, cart, lunch and prizes.  This is a fun way to spend an afternoon on the golf course and support the band at the same time!  Contact Jo Lynne Clauson at 359-8099 or joclauson@comcast.net with any questions.

• Homework Club: Ms. Milani will be running homework club starting Tuesday, September 3^rd, from 2:45-4:00pm in room 142.  Homework club will meet Tuesday-Thursday and the 2^nd and 4^th Mondays of the month.  Students are expected to bring work to do and behavior expectations are the same as the normal classroom.  This is a drop-in club and you can come as little or as much as you want.  It is a great way for students to get extra help if they feel they're struggling with a subject or falling behind on homework assignments.  Please be aware that students will be responsible for getting themselves home after club and will need to arrange a ride or know the bus schedule.  You can contact Ms. Milani (milanije@champaignschools.org) or Mrs. Dodds (doddsly@champaignschools.org) if you have any questions.

• Basketball and Volleyball Donations: Edison's volunteer/mentor coordinator is looking for a couple people to donate basketballs/soccer balls/volleyballs for the students to use during their recess time.  Her office is located above the cafeteria, so the students pass by me on their way out to the blacktop for lunch. These items do not need to be new, and anything you could give would be appreciated.  Please e-mail  doddsly@champaignschools.org if you would like to help.
  

 

• ACTIONS: attached is more info about the district's ACTIONS plan for students who are under disciplinary suspension. Wednesday August 21^st the ACTIONS coordinator will be giving short talks about the program and it's goals at the Family Information Center.

• Public Health Offer Physicals and Immunizations: The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, in partnership with the Carle Family Medicine Residency Program, is offering school physical and Tdap vaccination clinics.  Tdap is required by law for all students entering 6^th and 12^th grades for the 2013-14 school year.  All students in need of physicals and immunizations are welcome, including kindergarten.
  

 

When:  July 20, August 24, September 21, October 5 and October 12, 2013

Where:  Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, 201 W. Kenyon Road, Champaign, IL  61820

Time:  10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

 

Pricing and Insurance:

·        School Physical:  Free

·        Tdap Administration:  Billed to Medicaid and Health Alliance Insurance.  Please bring insurance card

• Open House:  Mark your calendars! Edison's fall open house will be September 12^th from 6:30-8:00pm
  

 

• Free and Reduced Lunch: Champaign Unit 4 parents can go to the Food Service page on the District's website to access the new online free and reduced applications. The free and reduced applications must be filled out for students to receive fee waivers.  New applications must be filled out each school year. Parents who received a letter from Food Service stating they were on the Direct Certification list do not have to fill out a new free and reduced application and fees will be waived. Parents can also check the status of the application 24-48 hours after completion, whether they are free, reduced, or denied and can print the status page for their records.  This is days to weeks earlier than notification in the past. We would like to strongly encourage parents to use the online application before registration so they can avoid lines at the food service table during the school enrollment dates in the coming weeks.
