EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

October 12

 

·         8th graders: The last day to turn in 2010 orders will be today (Monday, October 12).  Please give your order form to Ms. Borchardt or Mr. Guzman by 3:00 pm on Monday, October 12.  An order form is attached to the announcements.

 

·         Order Edison Spirit Wear through Oct 29th: If your student has noticed their friends wearing the new black Edison spirit wear and would like to get a t-shirt, sweatshirt or sweat pants, there is still time to order! Edison spirit wear can be purchased through October 29th, and the orders will be distributed sometime in early November.  If you are purchasing items as gifts for your student, please clearly mark the order form, otherwise clothing will be distributed to your student at school. The order form is attached. ·         Cross Country: Congratulations to Edison’s boys varsity team and Neda Sroka for qualifying for state. They will race on Saturday in the State Competition at Maxwell Park at Normal Parkside. The girls race begins at 11:45 a.m. and boys run at 12:30 p.m. Congratulations on a great season. Special thanks to Coach Mills and Coach Jurkowski.

 

·         Girls Basketball: Come cheer on the Comets! Upcoming games:

o   Tues., Oct. 13 at Franklin, 4:15pm

o   Wed., Oct. 14 home against Holy Cross, 4:15pm

o   Thurs., Oct. 15 at Jefferson, 4:15pm

o   Tues., Oct. 20 at Unity, 4:15pm

o   Thurs., Oct. 22 home against Mahomet, 4:15pm

o   Mon., Oct. 26 at South View, 4:15pm

o   Tues., Oct. 27 home against Eater, 4:15pm

o   Thurs., Oct. 29 at Urbana, 4:15pm (this is parent-teacher conference night.  Parents should contact their daughter's homeroom teacher ASAP to set up a conference letting the homeroom teacher know that we have a game on Thursday night so you need to schedule your appointment now.

 

·         Boys Basketball: Young men in grades 6th, 7th and 8th who have turned in their paperwork can try out for Edison’s 7th and 8th grade Boys Basketball teams. 6th grade tryouts for the 7th grade team will be on Monday, October 19 from 3:00 until 4:30 p.m. in the north gym.   Coach Cain will select up to 5 of the 6th graders to attend tryouts for the 7th grade team. 7th grade boys basketball tryouts will be held on Tuesday, October 20 and Wednesday, October 21 from 3:00 until 4:30 p.m. in the north gym. The 8th grade boys basketball tryouts will be held Monday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 20 from 7:30 until 9:00 p.m. in the north gym.  Selected teams will be announced after tryouts on Wednesday, October 21. Their first practice will be Wednesday, October 21 from 7:30 until 9:00 p.m. in the north gym.  There is a MANDATORY parent meeting for the Boys Basketball teams on Thursday, October 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.  The 7th grade team will have practice from 3:00 until 4:30 p.m. in the south gym while the 8th grade team will have practice after the parent meeting and once the girls basketball game is over (7ish until 9 p.m. in the north gym).

 

·         Tryouts for 6th grade Boys Basketball:  This team is not an IESA team but a competitive team we have in partnership with the Park District.  Teams include Jefferson, Franklin, Mahomet, Blue Ridge, Illini Swift, Urbana, Champaign Thunder, Park District Select, and St. Joe.  Games are played on Wednesday nights or once in awhile on Sunday at Douglas Center. The date for tryouts will be announced soon.

 

·         Wrestling and Volleyball:  Anyone interested in wrestling or volleyball must have their current physical, completed Champaign Unit 4 form and written proof of insurance turned in to Ms. Borchardt in room 122 by Friday, November 13.

 

October 9

 

·         Creative Writing Club: Edison’s Creative Writing Club (CWC) will meet on Tuesdays after school, November 10th through February 23rd.   Meetings will be held in room 246 from 2:45 - 4:00 p.m.  Activities will include a teacher-led creative writing exercise, time for writing, reading a variety of poems and stories, and a structured time for getting and giving feedback on each other’s writing.  Students wishing to attend CWC should see Mrs. Biddle, room 246, for a schedule and a parent permission form.   Parent permission slips must be turned in to Mrs. Biddle by Friday, Oct. 23rd.

 

·         PTSA Meeting: The Edison PTSA will meet Tuesday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Edison Library.  Everyone is welcome!  Come hear a special presentation and learn how to check your child’s grades using the new online system. When you attend meetings, you get the chance to find out more about everything that’s happening at Edison. Come at 6:45 p.m. for refreshments and fellowship time.

 

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

 

·         Make a Difference Day: This month, the Regional Office of Education is holding a Make a Difference Day Project, which will encourage school children to contribute to the restoration of the Clock and Bell Tower at the Champaign County Courthouse. Edison Middle School is participating in this project from October 12th through October 22nd. Your child can help the effort by bringing in a donation to Edison’s librarian. ROE staff will collect and tally the donations from all the Champaign County schools and make one big donation to the Clock Tower Restoration effort on behalf of all Champaign County School Children. For more details, see the attached flyer.

 

·         Boundaries for High Schools: Everyone is encouraged to attend the Community Forum about high school redistricting on Monday, October 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Melon Building (John and New Streets).  Make your voice heard!

 

 

October 7

 

·         Food Fight:  Edison students, teachers and families are participating in the annual Eastern Illinois food drive again this year. It runs through Friday, October 16.  This year, Edison will also be participating in the Food Fight Competition, which is a cash or coin donation drive.  We will be in competition with other area middle and high schools. The amount of money collected will be reported to WCIA-TV Channel 3 every day and school totals will be announced daily on the Morning Show. The winning school will receive a visit from the Morning Show and receive a trophy on air.  A teacher from every team has volunteered to collect the canned food and/or money.  Please donate to help those in need.  Thank you for supporting Edison Middle School, Edison Student Council, and the Eastern Illinois Foodbank.  If you have any questions please email, Mr. Guzman, guzmanje@champaignschools.org, or Mrs. Altenbaumer, altenbsh@champaignschools.org.    

 

·         Spirit Wear Distribution this Friday!: Edison Spirit Wear will be distributed this Friday, October 9th during all three lunch periods.  If you placed an order either during registration, or by the September 9th deadline, apparel is ready for pick up. Pick-up tables will be set up at the top of the stairs opposite the cafeteria, so please remind your student to stop sometime during their lunch to pick up their order.  We will be placing the last order of the year at the end of October, to be distributed the beginning of November.  (If you ordered after the September 9th deadline, your apparel will be distributed with the October orders.)  The order form is attached.  If you have questions, please contact Jo Lynne Clauson at joclauson@comcast.net or Jacquie Pound at jacquie.pound@att.net.

 

·         Leadership Academy: Students may still apply for the Leadership Academy sponsored by Sigma Phi Epsilon and Edison Middle School.  These events happen during the school day and the first one is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4.  Students may pick up applications in the Comets Community Center.  Students must turn in their completed applications by Friday, October 16 to be eligible for the November 4th session.

 

·         Parent Volunteers for Book Fair: The library is looking for parent volunteers to help with the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair, October 21 - 30. Volunteers are especially needed Thursday, October 29th from 4-8 p.m. during Parent/Teacher Conferences. October 5

 

·         Computer Club:  Computer Club will NOT meet after school on Wednesday, October 7.

 

·         Class of 2010 apparel: Orders for 2010 t-shirts and sweatshirts for 8th graders is due on Friday, October 9. You can order a short sleeve t-shirt ($10), long sleeve t-shirt ($17), and/or hoodie sweatshirt ($32). All apparel features the signatures of all of their 8th grade classmates. T-shirts are red with “2010” in black. The sweatshirt is red with a black liner in the hood, black side panels and a pouch front pocket. “2010” will be in black. Checks can be made out to “Edison Middle School.” Send in the completed form (attached) with your money. If you have questions contact Jackie Borchardt at borchja@champaignschools.org.

 

·         Edison Caps: Ms. Borchardt has two Edison baseball caps available for $10 each.  If you are interested in one, please contact her at 377-8584 or borchaja@champaignschools.org

 

·         Cross Country: Congratulations to Edison’s runners on a great race in Monticello. The boys varsity team won 1st place overall! Medal winners included: Reis DeSantis, Nimesh Avashia, Isaac Kasten, Ashton Hyatt, Chloe Lessarus, Natalie Akins, Kelly McDonald, Deonte Young, and Andy Roadcap. The next race is Thursday, October 8 at Clinton at 4:30 p.m.  The varsity boys and girls teams will run at sectionals on Saturday, October 10 at Lake of the Woods. 

 

·         Boys Basketball: Current physicals, completed Champaign Unit 4 Insurance and Participation form, and written proof of insurance are due Friday, Oct. 9 for any young man in 6th, 7th and 8th grade who would like to try out for the basketball teams.  If you are unsure if your son has all his paperwork on file please contact Jackie Borchardt at 377-8584 or borchaja@champaignschools.org. Tryouts will be held October 19 and 20.

 

·         Wrestling: Wrestling does not hold tryouts. Their season begins on Monday, November 30.  Wrestling is open to any young lady and young man in 6th, 7th or 8th grade. Anyone wishing to be on the wrestling team must have a current physical, completed Champaign Unit 4 Insurance and Participation form, and written proof of insurance on file with Ms. Borchardt by Friday, November 13.

 

·         Volleyball: Volleyball tryouts will begin on Monday, November 30. Volleyball will allow 6th graders to try out for the 7th grade team. Coach Taylor can select up to five 6th graders to tryout with the 7th grade team.  From those five 6th graders she can select up to 2 to be on the 7th grade team. Anyone wishing to try out for the volleyball team must have a current physical, completed Champaign Unit 4 Insurance and Participation form, and written proof of insurance on file with Ms. Borchardt by Friday, November 13.

 

·         Thank you!: A special thanks to the 25+ volunteers and Edison teachers and staff who made the first school dance a great success. All of the money raised will go back to mini-grants for teachers and other important projects to help Edison students.
