EDISON PTSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

October 30

 

·         Home Access Center: The Home Access Center provides an online grade book where parents and guardians can view helpful student information to support and guide their children through the educational process. From home or work, at any time of the day or night, parents can access the Web portal (http://www.champaignschools.org/edison/HAC.html) to track academic achievement through their student’s test scores, report card, attendance records, and class assignments. E-mail links are also available throughout the portal so parents can communicate with the school and teachers. 

 

A letter with username and password information has been mailed to parents. If you do not receive a letter by mail, you can contact the school office. You will need to go in person to the office and show identification in order to receive the username and password information for your student.

 

·         NSBE Jr.: At Wednesday’s Convocation, students experienced a wonderful presentation from the U of I chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.  NSBE Jr. is a club that aims to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is open to all students who are interested in learning about these subjects. Edison students will meet on Wednesdays, after school from 2:45-4:15 p.m..  In order to join students must have a signed permission slip.  (see attached NSBE Jr. file)  There is limited room so students should  turn in their permission slips as soon as possible  to Mrs. Mastny in the Community Center or to any teacher.

 

October 28

·         Punkin Chunkin’ to support CU Schools:  On November 1, 2009, the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation will hold a smashing event from noon - 4 pm on the corner of Prospect and Olympian at the Pinehurst Fields in Champaign! (North of Meijer and Walmart). Nationally known Acme Catapult, Inc. will be providing us with an exhibition by launching 25 pumpkins (one-at-a-time) at approx. 350 mph, 600 ft. high and 1200 feet long at a MTD CITY BUS!

This fundraiser supports our local education foundation – the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation - which works everyday to make our schools the best place for our local kids to learn and grow through cash grants to teachers, special projects, support for struggling families and scholarships. ·         Computer Club Today:  The Computer Club will meet today (October 26) after school.

 

·         6th Grade Boys Basketball: Parents of boys who were selected for the 6th grade boys basketball team should attend a parents meeting tonight (October 26) at 5:30 pm in the Edison cafeteria.

 

·         Edison Spirit Wear: Orders for Edison Spirit wear will be accepted through the end of Parent Teacher conferences on October 29th. The clothing will be distributed sometime in early November.  If you are purchasing items as gifts for your student, please clearly mark the order form, otherwise clothing will be distributed to your student at school. The order form is attached. If you have any questions, contact Jo Lynne Clauson at joclauson@comcast.net or Jacquie Pound at jacquie.pound@att.net.

Reminder: Students have a half day of school on Thursday and no school on Friday because of the conferences.

At the end of the tryouts Coach Woods will meet with the boys to let them know who will be on the team because the selected players will be having practice that afternoon (Saturday, October 24) from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 pm in the north gym.

 

·         Cross Country: Congratulations to Edison’s cross country runners on a great season. The varsity boys team placed 12th in the state and Neda Sroka had a great race on Saturday. All had personal best times. Also, all cross country parents should email Amy Sills concerning the banquet. Her e-mail is amy.sills@chartersills.com.

 

·         Creative Writing Club: Edison’s Creative Writing Club (CWC) will meet on Tuesdays after school, November 10th through February 23rd.   Meetings will be held in room 246 from 2:45 - 4:00 p.m. Activities will include a teacher-led creative writing exercise, time for writing, reading a variety of poems and stories, and a structured time for getting and giving feedback on each other’s writing. Students wishing to attend CWC should complete the attached form including the parent permission slip and turn it in to Mrs. Biddle by Friday, Oct. 23rd.

[Edison-PTSA] Teacher Appreciation Supper - MORE HELP NEEDED!

Thank you to the 5 people bringing sides, 4 people bring desserts, and 4 bringing drinks so far for the Edison PTSA teacher supper on Thursday this week, October 29, during Parent-Teacher conferences.

We still need lots more donations to make the dinner a success.  We know how hard it is as a working parent to fix food for school so we have come up with a list of items you can pick up at the grocery store during your weekly shopping trip and send to school with your student.

Here are some no prep items that don’t need refrigeration: 

9 packages of  bread or sandwich rolls

Desserts, such as cookies, brownies, cakes, or pies, ready made from the bakery section

Beverages which could include liter bottles of soda, juice or water

Condiments, including pickles, mustard, and mayonnaise

Chips or other sides

Napkins, plates, cups and silverware- send even part, up to 100 settings   

Minimal prep items, but need refrigeration include:

           Sides such as baby carrots or other veggies and dip

            Salads or other sides, often available from the deli section

           Washed tomatoes and washed lettuce

Prep items for those who have time

            Salads or sides or desserts

            Help with event on October 29, anytime between 2:30 and 6:30 pm

·         Donate to Teacher Appreciation Dinner: The PTSA is hosting a dinner for all Edison staff members during the parent teacher conferences on Thursday, October 29th.  The PTSA will provide meat and cheese platters to make sandwiches.  We need parents to provide sides, desserts, and drinks.  If you are able to donate, please email Kristian Sargeant at Kristian.sargeant@sjcnc.org and let her know what you are bringing. This is a great way to show Edison teachers and staff that we appreciate their work with our students. ·         Parent Volunteers for Book Fair: The library is looking for parent volunteers to help with the Scholastic Book Fair this week. Volunteers are especially needed Thursday, October 29th from 4-8 p.m. during Parent/Teacher Conferences. If your student has noticed their friends wearing the new black Edison spirit wear and would like to get a t-shirt, sweatshirt or sweat pants, there is still time to order! Edison spirit wear can be purchased through the end of Parent Teacher conferences on October 29th, and the orders will be distributed sometime in early November.  If you are purchasing items as gifts for your student, please clearly mark the order form, otherwise clothing will be distributed to your student at school. The order form is attached. ·         History Club: Do you enjoy history?  Do you want to learn more about other times and places?  Are you interested in current events happening throughout the world?  Come see what the Edison History Club has planned.  There will be an informational meeting today (October 13) from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. in room 226.  See Mr. Cain for more details.

 

·         PTSA Meeting Tonight: The Edison PTSA will meet tonight (October 13) at 7:00 p.m. in the Edison Library. Come learn how to check your child’s grades using the new online system and find out about all the things that are happening at Edison. Everyone is welcome.

 

·         Student Council: There is a Student Council Meeting this Wednesday, October14th in Mrs. Altenbaumer’s room from 2:45-3:30 p.m..  We will be discussing the Food Drive and getting ready for our first Candy Gram Sale.  Anyone can still join, so find a friend and come join the fun.  If you have any questions, please talk to Mr. Guzman or Mrs. Altenbaumer.

·         Food Fight:  Edison students, teachers and families are participating in the annual Eastern Illinois food drive again this year. It runs through Friday, October 16.  Students are encouraged to bring in canned food and/or a cash donation to help the hungry in our area. ·         Leadership Academy:  Applications for the Leadership Academy are due by Friday, October 16 to be eligible for the November 4th session. The Academy is sponsored by Sigma Phi Epsilon and Edison Middle School.  For details, see the attached application form.

 

·         Reflections:  Students who are participating in the 2009-10 PTA Reflections Program need to turn in their entry by Tuesday, October 20th at 4:00 p.m.  A completed entry form must be attached. To enter, students must create a work of art (dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts) that illustrates the theme "Beauty is...."   Entry forms and official rules are available in the school office.  Contact Lauren Smith at 352-0809 or Laurentols@aol.com if you have questions.

·         Reflections:  Students who are participating in the 2009-10 PTA Reflections Program need to turn in their entry by Tuesday, October 20th at 4:00 p.m.  A completed entry form must be attached. To enter, students must create a work of art (dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts) that illustrates the theme "Beauty is...."   Entry forms and official rules are available in the school office.  Contact Lauren Smith at 352-0809 or Laurentols@aol.com if you have questions.

 

·         Creative Writing Club: Edison’s Creative Writing Club (CWC) will meet on Tuesdays after school, November 10th through February 23rd.   Meetings will be held in room 246 from 2:45 - 4:00 p.m. Activities will include a teacher-led creative writing exercise, time for writing, reading a variety of poems and stories, and a structured time for getting and giving feedback on each other’s writing. Students wishing to attend CWC should complete the attached form including the parent permission slip and turn it in to Mrs. Biddle by Friday, Oct. 23rd.

 

·         Parent Volunteers for Book Fair: The library is looking for parent volunteers to help with the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair, October 21 - 30. Volunteers are especially needed Thursday, October 29th from 4-8 p.m. during Parent/Teacher Conferences. ·         Order Edison Spirit Wear through Oct 29th: If your student has noticed their friends wearing the new black Edison spirit wear and would like to get a t-shirt, sweatshirt or sweat pants, there is still time to order! Edison spirit wear can be purchased through October 29th, and the orders will be distributed sometime in early November.  If you are purchasing items as gifts for your student, please clearly mark the order form, otherwise clothing will be distributed to your student at school. The order form is attached. ·         Cross Country: Congratulations to Edison’s boys varsity team and Neda Sroka for qualifying for state. They will race on Saturday in the State Competition at Maxwell Park at Normal Parkside. The girls race begins at 11:45 a.m. and boys run at 12:30 p.m. Congratulations on a great season. Special thanks to Coach Mills and Coach Jurkowski.

·         Boys Basketball: Young men in grades 6th, 7th and 8th who have turned in their paperwork can try out for Edison’s 7th and 8th grade Boys Basketball teams. 6th grade tryouts for the 7th grade team will be on Monday, October 19 from 3:00 until 4:30 p.m. in the north gym.   Coach Cain will select up to 5 of the 6th graders to attend tryouts for the 7th grade team. 7th grade boys basketball tryouts will be held on Tuesday, October 20 and Wednesday, October 21 from 3:00 until 4:30 p.m. in the north gym. The 8th grade boys basketball tryouts will be held Monday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 20 from 7:30 until 9:00 p.m. in the north gym.  Selected teams will be announced after tryouts on Wednesday, October 21. Their first practice will be Wednesday, October 21 from 7:30 until 9:00 p.m. in the north gym.  There is a MANDATORY parent meeting for the Boys Basketball teams on Thursday, October 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.  The 7th grade team will have practice from 3:00 until 4:30 p.m. in the south gym while the 8th grade team will have practice after the parent meeting and once the girls basketball game is over (7ish until 9 p.m. in the north gym).

 

·         Tryouts for 6th grade Boys Basketball:  This team is not an IESA team but a competitive team we have in partnership with the Park District.  Teams include Jefferson, Franklin, Mahomet, Blue Ridge, Illini Swift, Urbana, Champaign Thunder, Park District Select, and St. Joe.  Games are played on Wednesday nights or once in awhile on Sunday at Douglas Center. The date for tryouts will be announced soon.

 

·         Wrestling and Volleyball:  Anyone interested in wrestling or volleyball must have their current physical, completed Champaign Unit 4 form and written proof of insurance turned in to Ms. Borchardt in room 122 by Friday, November 13.

·         History Club: Do you enjoy history?  Do you want to learn more about other times and places?  Are you interested in current events happening throughout the world?  Come see what the Edison History Club has planned.  There will be an informational meeting today (October 13) from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. in room 226.  See Mr. Cain for more details.

 

·         PTSA Meeting Tonight: The Edison PTSA will meet tonight (October 13) at 7:00 p.m. in the Edison Library. Come learn how to check your child’s grades using the new online system and find out about all the things that are happening at Edison. Everyone is welcome.

 

·         Student Council: There is a Student Council Meeting this Wednesday, October14th in Mrs. Altenbaumer’s room from 2:45-3:30 p.m..  We will be discussing the Food Drive and getting ready for our first Candy Gram Sale.  Anyone can still join, so find a friend and come join the fun.  If you have any questions, please talk to Mr. Guzman or Mrs. Altenbaumer.

 

·         Computer Club: Computer Club will NOT meet tomorrow (October 14) after school.

 

·         Food Fight:  Edison students, teachers and families are participating in the annual Eastern Illinois food drive again this year. It runs through Friday, October 16.  Students are encouraged to bring in canned food and/or a cash donation to help the hungry in our area. ·         Leadership Academy:  Applications for the Leadership Academy are due by Friday, October 16 to be eligible for the November 4th session. The Academy is sponsored by Sigma Phi Epsilon and Edison Middle School.  For details, see the attached application form.
