Edison's Mission

It is our mission at Edison Middle School to work collaboratively to place the focus on the academic, social, and emotional needs of each individual student first and ensure that ALL students are prepared for post-secondary education.

Upcoming events:

For home vollleyball events all Edison students MUST have their school ID to be admitted to the event.  Admission is $1 for students and $2 for adults.  Students are expected to have a ride home 15 min. after the completion of the event.  Students are to leave school at 2:40 then return at 4 pm using door #6.  Students are to enter gym only after receiving an admission ticket.

   Mandatory meeting for track member, track member parent(s), coaches and AD in the Edison cafeteria beginning at 5:30 pm

 

Track required paperwork due Fri., Feb. 5 - required paperwork includes current physical, completed Champaign Unit 4 form, Completed waiver form and copy of insurance/medical card on file with Ms.Borchardt not the main office.  Check the list outside the cafeteria to be sure you are cleared for track.

 

Track season is approaching. 

1.  Edison students in 6th, 7th ad 8th grade will sign up for track during their SS class on Tues., Feb. 9 (7th graders who have Ms. Rotramel will sign up during SC with Mr. Bergman)

2. Using the sign up sheets I will develop a roster.  All who sign up and have all 4 pieces of the requried paperwork turned in to me by Fri., Feb. 5 will be on the roster.

3.  Required track member/parent/coaches meeting will be held on Mon., Feb. 29 beginning at 5:30 pm in the Edison cafeteria. No one may begin practicing with the team until they have the paperwork from the meeting turned in by Wed., March 2, 2016.

    Wrestlers and/or Volleyball players - you will still be in season for your sport, however, you can still be on the track roster.  You and your parent MUST attend the parent meeting.  You will join the track team AFTER your wrestling/volleyball season has finished.

4.  If we have over 70 track members the coaches may hold tryouts.  We are asking track members to be able to attend 90% of track practices and track meets.  The schedules will be handed out at the meeting on Feb. 29

5. practices are at Centennial track from 6 - 7:15 pm

GOLF:  any current 6th or 7th grader interested in participating in the IESA golf tournament in Sept., 2016 please contact Ms. Borchardt by Feb 29, 2016.

Brixx Fundraiser for Edison Bands: tonight! On Tuesday February 2nd, have dinner at Brixx and support Edison Middle School Bands.  Please print the attached flyer and bring it with you.  We will get $1 for each child's pizza and $3 for each 10 inch pizza.

Applications for the Edison chapter of the National Junior Honor Society are now available from Mr. Cain (room 128) and in the main office (and attached to this message).  Applications are due to Mr. Cain by March 4, 2016.  Current National Junior Honor Society members do not need to complete the applications for this year, but should contact Mr. Cain about their 2015-2016 community service hours.  If there are any questions please contact Mr. Cain at cainza@champaignschools.org or 351-3771.

Minutes from the January PTSA meeting are attached.  If you (or someone you know) are interested in PTSA activities and perhaps taking a leadership role in 2016-2017, contact gretchenpein@gmail.com.  The next PTSA meeting will be Monday February 8, 6 pm in the Edison Library.

Black History Fact: Black History Month began as "Negro History Week," which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

The results are in!  Edison's 2014-2015 literary arts magazineRetro, was rated as an EXCELLENT by the NCTE this past year!  All Edison students should consider submitting their work this year for a chance to be featured.  Retro is a student-created magazine that is published at the end of the school year with the year's best student writing, art, and photography.  The submission deadline for this year is March 9th. We accept writing, art, and photography.  

To submit, share your work with edisonretro@gmail.com , making sure to put at the top:

1. The title of the piece

2. Your name* 

3. Genre of the piece (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, art, or photography)

4. Your grade

5. Your homeroom teacher

*Note: All authors'/artists' names remain anonymous to Retro members during the selection process. If you wish to remain anonymous in the magazine itself, please put an * next to your name in your submission.

Lastly, we are still looking for students for our team! Come to room 226 on Thursdays from 2:50-3:50 to be a part of the team selecting and arranging the work for the magazine.  Questions? Contact Mrs. Wolz or Ms. Garber.

Dance: the next Edison Dance will be Friday February 12, 6-8 pm at school.  Mark your calendars; details coming soon!

Edison Clubs: a list of Edison clubs is attached.

Former Bottenfield students: this year is the first Huckstadt Hustle, a timed 5K race around the Bottenfield neighborhood to honor PE teacher Mrs. Wendy Huckstadt.  Proceeds from this race will assist with registration fees for any current Bottenfield student (grades 3-5) who wishes to run the Illinois Marathon 5K. Thanks for the Box Tops collected so far this year!  We will receive a check for $260 for the Box Tops we have collected and now it's time to start again.  Mrs. Wells is collecting them for new PE equipment. You may send them into her or give them to any teacher to put in her mailbox. Thanks for the support!!
