[Edison-PTSA] Teacher Appreciation Needs

Parents,

 

Next week is national Teacher Appreciation, and we need your help!!  Can you please purchase some item and bring it in or send with your child?  Donations are also accepted.

Monday – Fruit (apples, bananas, oranges) (because we go bananas over our teachers!)

               

Tuesday – Chocolate Chip Cookies (to go with the Cookie Cake)

 

Wednesday – Pizza Lunch (need donations to help pay for the pizza, etc.)

 

Thursday – Smarties candy (our kids are smart because of our teachers!)

 

Friday – Ice Cream Treats / Popsicles (we think our teachers are cool!)

April 28

 

·         Thank You to Volunteers: The Edison PTSA would like to thank everyone who has volunteered this year for the school.  TODAY, Edison school staff will recognize volunteers at the annual Edison Volunteer Reception which will be held from 10-11 a.m. in the school cafeteria.

 

·         PTSA Board Meeting: The Edison PTSA Officers will be meeting this Thursday, April 29, at noon at Atlanta Bread on south Neil Street.  Everyone is welcome!  We will be discussing activities for the last month of school, including Teacher Appreciation Week (May 3-7) and end of year activities.

 

·         PTSA Needs a Treasurer:  The Edison PTSA is need of a Treasurer for the 2010-2011 school year.  If you have a current 6th grader, please especially consider stepping up.  Training is provided.  In addition, the current Treasurer will still be here next year to help you through it.  Contact Jennifer Clarke (jenniferandjohnc@sbcglobal.net) or Mary Schoen Petersen (schoenpetersen@comcast.net) for more info or if you’re interested.

 

·         We Love Our Teachers:  Next week, May 3-7 is national Teacher Appreciation week.  The PTSA would like to show our Edison Teachers how much we appreciate all that they do for our students by doing something nice for them each day next week.  We need 5 to 10 parents to split up the days and just do a little something for the teachers (Friday will be a pizza lunch).  If you need ideas for the other 4 days, we can help with that!  It would mean so much to them!  Contact Kristian Sargeant (Kristian.sargeant@sjcnc.org), Jennifer Clarke (jenniferandjohnc@sbcglobal.net), or Mary Schoen Petersen (schoenpetersen@comcast.net) to help us out.  The Teachers will thank you and so will we!

 

·         International Day: Edison’s International Day will be held Thursday, May 6 from noon to 2:45 p.m. If you can volunteer your time to help, please contact Angie Patton at apatton2@illinois.edu or call 766-8712. This is a fun day for the students to experience different cultures.

 

·         Congratulations: Edison 6th grader Ben Carlton participated in Chess Fest in Champaign on April 17 and received second place. Congratulations!

Shows will be held at 7 p.m. in the Edison Auditorium on Thursday, April 29, Friday, April 30, and Saturday, May 1.  There will also be a 2:30pm matinee on Saturday, May 1.   Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for students.  Children under 6 are admitted free.  Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance with a cast member and theater doors will open a half hour before show times.

 

·         Wrestling, Volleyball and 6th Grade Boy’s Basketball: Edison’s wrestlers, 7th/8th grade volleyball teams and 6th grade boy’s basketball teams will be recognized at Edison’s last convocation on April 28. These teams are asked to sit in the middle sections of the auditorium in this order: First row:  6BBB team; Second row:  wrestlers; and Third and fourth rows:  VB players.

 

·         Athletic Camps for Edison Students: Boy’s basketball camp will be Monday, August 2 through 6 from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. (grade level times will be announced shortly) and Girl’s basketball camp will be Monday, August 9 through 13:  from 8 a.m.  until 10 a.m. for incoming 8th graders and from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for incoming 6th and 7th graders. Cost for camps is $50 per student.  Camps are for Edison students only. A flyer containing more information will be sent out soon. ·         Annie Jr.: Come out and enjoy a fun evening as Edison students present Annie Jr. this week.  This wonderful, shortened version of the musical Annie, features our favorite, spunky girl and other interesting characters. You will enjoy the music and the talent! ·         Busey Illinois Youth Run at the Illinois Marathon:  This year, the CU Schools Foundation (CUSF) is a charitable partner of the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon. We want to double the number of area kids who participate in the Busey Illinois Youth Run, a 1K race for children ages 3-10. Fitness contributes to excellence in education! And, $1 of every child's registration will be donated to CUSF. Over the last two years, CUSF has given nearly $320,000 in grants to CU public school teachers to benefit your kids in the classroom. ·         Keegan Bannon Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser: A fund-raising benefit for the Keegan Bannon Memorial Scholarship for a graduating Central High School Senior will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010.  Entertainment and food is included. There will be performances by: Central High School Jazz Ensemble, Edison Middle School Jazz Band 1 and The Boat Drunks (Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band). Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The Edison Middle School Jazz Band and Central High School Jazz bands will perform from 6:00-8:30 p.m. The Boat Drunks perform from 9 p.m. til midnight. It will be held at Peter B's Automotive Annex, 1304 Butzow Drive, Urbana, IL (the blue and white building diagonal from our main business). Tickets are $15 for students and those under 21 (Ticket good from 5:30 p.m. til 10 p.m.) and $35 per person or $60 per couple for adults (Tickets are good from 5:30 p.m. til midnight.  Make checks payable to "Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation" and put "Keegan Bannon Memorial Scholarship Fund" in the memo section. Tickets may be purchased at Peter B's Automotive, Corson Music (Champaign and Urbana), J2, Billy Barooz, and Central High School. If you would like to purchase on line, you can go to eiphc.com and click on the News section. If you want to donate ONLY, you can go online to www.give2schools.org and click on "ways to give". ·         Reminder: Flying Illini meets Mondays and Fridays in the cafeteria and Computer Club with the Geek Squad meets in the computer lab in room 232 on Thursdays.  Students should bring music for their video next week. They will be taking apart and putting back together computers next week.

·         From the Champaign Public Library: re you a singer or poet, a juggler or a comedian? Show off what you do best at our first ever Teen Talent Show on May 28 at the Champaign Public Library, 200 W. Green St., 7pm. You will enjoy the music and the talent! ·         Athletic Banquet: The athletic banquet for Baseball, Girl’s Basketball, Boy’s Basketball and Volleyball will be Monday, May 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Stone Creek Church. More information will be sent out soon. Cross Country students who have the top 5 GPA’s will receive a special invitation to attend as well.

They’ll be enjoying a meal together and celebrating the students’ successes this year. The breakfast will be held from 7:00 a.m.-7:50 a.m. in the Edison Middle School Library.

·         Reception for Volunteers: Have you volunteered to chaperone a dance, a field trip or helped out in a classroom?  Are you one of the many who provided treats for our teachers?  If you take the time to volunteer at Edison, we would like to invite you to attend our annual Edison Volunteer Reception on April 28 from 10-11 a.m. in our cafeteria (see attached, Volunteer Reception).  If you are planning to attend, please let the school know as soon as possible. ·         6th Annual Champaign Area Youth Football Camp: The 2010 Champaign Youth Football Camp will be held Monday, June 21st- Thursday, June 24th.  All area boy/girls entering grades 1st-8th are invited to attend.  Camp will be held at McKinley Field located on New Street, behind the Melon Building and Southside Elementary School. ·         Athletics at Edison: If you have a student who is interested in participating in sports at Edison, you will want to be aware of the tryout dates and forms that need to be completed (see attached, 2010-2011 Edison Athletic Information). 6th Graders who plan to tryout for 7th grade teams should see the attached document titled 2010-2011 6th graders trying out… Here is a listing of IESA teams offered at Edison and tryout dates:

·         Cross Country (XC):   Open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys and girls; Tryouts/ practices may begin Monday, August 2

·         Baseball (BB): Open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys and girls; Tryouts may begin Monday, August 2 for a varsity and a junior varsity team

·         Girls Basketball (GBB): Open to all 6th (trying out for 7th grade team), 7th and 8th grade girls; Tryouts may begin Monday, August 30

·         Boys Basketball (BBB): Open to all 6th (trying out for 7th grade team), 7th and 8th grade boys; Tryouts may begin Monday, October 18

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

 

·         Volunteer Opportunity: The Salvation Army is teaming up with Interfaith in Action, a Registered Student Organization at the University of Illinois and Numana, Inc., a Kansas-based nonprofit, to send one million meals to Haiti directly from the hands of volunteers from the Champaign-Urbana community and the University of Illinois campus. This aid is desperately needed in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake earlier this year. Meals are packaged by groups of 12-14 people in an assembly line team effort, and as many as 50 teams of 700 people will be needed during ongoing packaging hours on Saturday, April 24 between 8 am and 6 pm and Sunday, April 25 between 1 pm and 6 pm. This effort will take place at the old Hobby Lobby building at 1916 Glenn Park Drive in Champaign. Volunteers can sign up through the Salvation Army website: http://www.usc.salvationarmy.org/champaign.

·         Sad News: Curtis McKinney, Edison Middle School teacher, passed away and was found in his apartment this morning.  Please keep his family and his Edison family in your thoughts and prayers.

 

·         Computer Club: Thursday’s Computer Club meeting with the Geek Squad will be the first steps in creating your PowerPoint music videos!  All students are welcome to join us. The club is held immediately after school.
