Edison's Mission

It is our mission at Edison Middle School to work collaboratively to place the focus on the academic, social, and emotional needs of each individual student first and ensure that ALL students are prepared for post-secondary education.

6th grade parents:  We offer a competitive 6th grade only basketball team in partnership with the Champaign Park District.  We hold tryouts which are open to 6th grade girls and boys. The selected team will consist of 12 - 15 players.  In the past the games have been played on Monday and Wednesday nights.  This position is voluntary.  If you are interested please send me an email and I can give you more info about the schedule and time frame.

 

Required paperwork for upcoming tryouts Boys Basketball, Wrestling and Volleyball:

Any student who is interested in trying out for any of our athletic teams must have the following 4 pieces of information on file by the deadline - do not turn in to the main office (scanning/emailing to me is perfect) or dropping the paperwork off in my room (122) works as well:

1.  Completed Champaign Unit 4 form (attached)

            2.  Current physical

            3.  Completed waiver form (attached)

            4.  Copy of your insurance or medical card

 

If you have turned a physical in to the main office please let me know so I can check the date.  I will still need the additional 3 pieces of required paperwork by the deadline.

 

Required paperwork for Boys Basketball due Friday, October 2, 2015  by 3 pm

Required paperwork for Wrestling and Volleyball due Friday, November 6, 2015 by 3 pm

 

Upcoming events:

For home basketball, volleyball and wrestling events all Edison students MUST have their school ID to be admitted to the event.  Admission is $1 for students and $2 for adults.  Students are expected to have a ride home 15 min. after the completion of the event.  Students are to leave school at 2:40 then return at 4 pm using door #6.  Students are to enter gym only after receiving an admission ticket.

 

Congratulations to Justin McCoy!!!  Justin competed in the IESA State Golf Tournament this past Saturday.  Justin placed 13th after shooting an 83.  

 

Any current 6th or 7th graders interested in competing in the IESA State Golf Tournament in Sept. 2016 please contact Jackie at borchaja@champaignschools.org.

 

Our baseball team was unable to defeat Mahomet in their regional game on Saturday bringing their season to an end.  Information about the upcoming banquet will be announced soon.

     *XC at Detweiler Park, 4:00 pm (eligible runners are to be dismissed from class at 1:15 pm)

 

Sun., Sept. 27

     *open gym for any Edison student except GBB players - you must have a waiver turned in to Ms. Borchardt in order to attend from 2 until 4 pm in the north gym.  Use door #7 to gain entrance.

 

Tues., Sept. 29

     *XC at Unity, 4 pm

     *GBB at St. Joe, 6 pm

 

Thurs., Oct. 1

     *Cross Country Conference Meet for varsity runners only at Urbana, 4:45 pm

     *GBB at Tuscola, 6 pm

 

Fri., Oct. 2

    *Required paperwork due for any young man interested in trying out for the 7th or 8th grade boys basketball team.

 

Sat., Oct. 3

     *XC at Lodge Park, 9 am

Spiritwear Orders: thanks to everyone who visited Edison for Open House!  If you weren't able to pick up your Spiritwear order, you'll be contacted via email shortly regarding delivery.  If you have questions, please contact Alicia Beck at alicia.beck72@gmail.com

Picture Day will be October 1; watch your backpacks and binders for more information.  (Retakes will be November 10)

Mark your calendars for the first school dance of the year on Friday October 2, 6-8 pm.  Admission is $2 and concessions will be for sale in the cafeteria (TCBY yogurt, pizza, soft drinks, water, candy).  There is no theme to this dance, and students can dress up or go casual (most go casual!). Students must bring a signed permission form and school id.  Permission forms will be handed out next week.

Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders: Do not drop off on Green Street.  Prairie Street (west of the school) is one way going north during drop-off and pick-up times.  To keep kids and vehicles safe, cars coming from the west (turning left onto Prairie) may pull over on the left side of Prairie, and cars coming from the east (turning right onto Prairie) pull over on the right side of Prairie.  Please pull forward as far as you can because there are a lot of cars waiting behind you, often as far back as the Green St/State St intersection.  Do try to wait for the car in front of you to pull away (instead of trying to pass) as there will be a lot of kids trying to get to the blacktop.  Also, please do not park on Prairie Street during drop off because this clogs traffic flow and creates an unsafe environment for our kids. 

PTSA Meeting: Minutes from the September 14 meeting are attached.  Mark your calendars for the next meeting on Monday October 19, 6 pm in the Edison library.

The next Choose Kindness meeting will be Monday October 5 after school. Also on 10/5/2015 from 5-6 at the Hays Recreation Center there will be a Choose Kindness Organization Conference, which will be a community-wide gathering featuring all the CKO chapters and members including: Centennial High School, Central High School, Edison Middle School, Jefferson Middle School, Champaign Park District, and Champaign Special Recreation

Cooking Contest: UNCLE BEN'S^® is excited to partner with PTAs across the country to help spread the word about this year's Ben's Beginners™ Cooking Contest, a movement to inspire healthy beginnings by getting families cooking and eating together.  This year, five grand prize-winning families will each be awarded $15,000—and their kids' school will receive $30,000 cafeteria makeovers!

It's easy and fun to enter the contest. Families simply create a short video that shows parents and kids cooking a rice dish and upload it to UncleBens.com. The contest ends on October 12, 2015.  For more info and to download materials, visit UncleBens.com.

Choir: Does your student sound awesome singing along to the radio in the car? The Edison Choir meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4pm. The choir is open to anyone who likes singing. You don't need any experience to join us. We're going to have some great times this year! Parents, if you have questions please contact Mr. Dare at dareje@champaignschools.org

Builders' Club will begin meeting after school on Wednesdays, starting September 9 in Mrs Easton's room (above the main office). If you love building, or if you want some experience using tools, join us! No experience necessary. This year we will work on a couple little projects, then we'll join Garden Club out at a local farm to assemble a chicken coop and build hoop houses for the winter. In association with the AV Club, Mr. Holden produces a yearly video year book. Throughout the year, if you have pictures of dances, sports events, team activities, field trips, club activities or classroom projects that you would like to share, please email them to Mr. Holden.    holdenal@champaignschools.org

Lunch Reminder: Students are NOT ALLOWED to order lunch and have it delivered to the school. If a parent wants to bring lunch to their student (Mcdonalds, pizza, etc) they have to stay with the child and eat with them in the cafeteria.

Champaign Public Library change in hours: if you plan to have your child spend time at the Champaign Public Library after school, please note their change in hours.  The library will close at 6 pm on Thursdays and Fridays.  You can find library information here: http://www.champaign.org/
