October 18
- Donations and Volunteers: We are still in need of bags of chips and salad for the staff dinner during conferences on October 27th. Your donations can be dropped off in the teachers' lounge any time during that day. We also need volunteers to help with set-up and clean-up at 3:00 and 5:30, respectively. Please contact Lynnette Dodds at lynnette24@sbcglobal.net if you can help.
October 17
- Student Council: Student Council will meet this Wednesday, October 19th after school in Mrs. Altenbaumer's room, room 234. We will finish around 3:30. We are working on the Food Drive event and Halloween Candy Grams. Student Council is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Everyone is welcome. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Altenbaumer or Mr. Guzman.
- Food Drive: Edison Middle School is once again supporting the Eastern Illinois Foodbank's efforts to keep families fed by encouraging students and their families to donate food items such as canned goods, peanut butter, soup, and boxed meals. Donation boxes are located in Mr. Freeman's room for Voyagers, Mr. Cain's room for Adventurers, Mrs. Witheft's room for Constellations, Ms. Whitfield's room for Galaxies, Mr. Becker's room for Navigators, and Mr. Guzman's for Explorers. The food drive starts today, Monday, October 17th and ends Thursday, October 27th. Student Council is sponsoring this event.
- Staff Dinner During Conferences: The PTSA will be providing dinner for the staff during parent/teacher conferences on October 27th. We will be providing catered Italian beef sandwiches and are looking for donations of the following: chips, salad and dessert. Please e-mail Lynnette Dodds at lynnette24@sbcglobal.net if you can help.
- National PTA Reflections Program: The Reflections program encourages students to explore their artistic talents inspired by a specific theme. This years Reflections theme is "Diversity Means." Visit the following web-site for entry forms and participation rules. http://www.ptareflections.org/cs/about_reflections All entries must be completed by 3:30pm, Oct. 21st. - Edison's Leadership Academy: Edison's Leadership Academy-run by Sigma Phi Epsilon-is taking applications from 7th and 8th grade students for the 2011-2012 school year. If students have a B average or better and strive to be a positive leader, we encourage them to apply. They will be excused from afternoon classes three times during the school year to participate in this program. In addition, they need parent permission and excellent references from two of their team teachers. Students can pick up applications during lunch on Friday, September 30 or can come up to the Comets Community Center, just above the cafeteria next week. The application is available as an attachment in this announcement.
- Athletic Events for the Week:
Mon., Oct. 17 and Tues., Oct. 18
7th/8th grade BBB tryouts (7th grade 3 – 430 in the north gym: 8th grade 7:30 until 9:00 pm in the north gym)
Anyone trying out must attend both days of tryouts.
Mandatory parent/player meeting for the selected team will be on Thurs., Oct. 20 at 5:30 pm in the cafeteria
Wed., Oct. 19
GBB vs South View, 4:15 pm in the north gym
Thurs., Oct. 20
GBB vs Mahomet, 4:15 pm in the north gym
6BBB tryout times have been changed to:
Thurs @ 4:30-6pm in the south gym
Friday @ 6-7:30am in the north gym
Mandatory parent/player meeting for 7th/8th grade BBB team, 5:30 pm in the cafeteria

- Volleyball and Wrestling Info
Anyone interested in trying out for wrestling or volleyball must have the required paperwork turned in to Ms. Borchardt by Thurs., Nov. 10. The required paperwork includes:
1. Current physical
2. Completed Champaign Unit 4 form
3. Copy of insurance card/medical card
Please see Ms. Borchardt (room 122) if you are not sure if you have the required paperwork turned in.
Wrestling and volleyball tryouts will begin on Monday, Nov. 28
6th grade girls can try out for the 7th grade IESA volleyball team. Coach Taylor can keep 0, 1, 2,3, 4 or 5 of the sixth graders who tryout.
Wrestling includes 6th, 7th and 8th graders from Edison, Jefferson and Franklin.
October 14
- Book Fair: Edison will be hosting a book fair from Friday, October 21st through Friday, October 28th. Ms. Debbie Smith will be packing it up after 11:00 on the 28th. She could use help during the week when classes are here or help on Thursday pm during conferences (4-8 PM) or Friday the 28th during conferences (8-11 AM). If you would like to volunteer some time to assist, please contact Ms. Smith at smithde@champaignschools.org
- Hands Off Event Volunteers: We need parent volunteers to help with the Edison Hands Off event on November 4th. This is to reward students with no discipline referrals. Action Inflatables will be at the school with different inflatables for the students to play on. We need parents to help monitor students. Please e-mail< howardto@champaignschools.org> if you are able to help in any way. Time of the event is 12:40-3pm. Parents can volunteer for shifts or for the entire event.
- Parent/Teacher Conferences: Parent teacher conferences are on October 27th and 28th. Teachers have or will be sending home slips to schedule times.
- Lots of Ways to Earn Money for Edison: At County Market You can sign up for OR register your current County Market Max Card for Education to Edison Middle School, the number is #331. Remember even if you have already registered this needs to be updated annually.
Target has a similar reward program called Take Charge for Education. Simply apply for a Target charge (Red Card)/debit card, get approved, and Target donates 1% of your Red Card/Target Debit card purchases to your school. Here is the link for more info and to apply http://sites.target.com/site/en/corporate/page.jsp?contentId=PRD03-005157 If you already have a Target charge/debit you can still earn money for Edison. With holiday shopping coming up this is a great and EASY way to help Edison Middle School!
Schnucks has a similar program. Sign up for an e-scrip card or use current one and you can help Edison earn money. This does not interfere with their gas rewards program.
- Edison Spirit Wear If you missed your chance to order Edison Spirit wear at registration, the final order for the school year will be taken from now until Nov 18th, order form is attached. These are the red tees and hoodies and gray sweats. Simply submit your order form along with payment in an envelope marked "spirit wear" to the office. The apparel will be ready early in December and will be distributed to your student, so be sure to indicate student name and grade level. - PE Clothing: Parents you can still order PE clothes for your student. Attached is the order form. Submit your order form along with payment in an envelope marked PE Clothes to the office.
